Juddy have you intentionally neglected to mention that the mindset of the players had little to do with the victory.

So what ur saying is as long as our mindset is right Mikkey Mouse could be coaching us and we would still win...there has to be more to it than that Cazz? Tonight we got it right tactically and yes of course the players were switched on but shouldn't they be each week to at least provide a competitive effort win or lose?

I think the issue is that for any of Ratts' plans to work the players need to be switched on and playing with the sort of effort required for them to work.

People going on about our tactics or lack there of after the Dons game were missing the above point.

None of the match-ups tonight can be credited to Ratts, the match committee got them all off bigfooty. Sack him.

I think the above point always gets missed in the need to score points in the various debates. It is never just the coach or just the players whether we win or lose.

Tonight the coaches come up with the gameplan and the matchups to beat the Saints and the players executed what they were asked to very well

Top job by Ratten and the coaching team today

If Ratten & co can get the tactics and player mindset right on a consistent basis, we have enough talent to go all the way this year, given the competition.

Ratten was very shaky in the coaching box early, and very emotional later, saw him wiping tears  Looks like he is truly under the pump !

Firstly,................

Well done to Ratten.
Just wanted to give credit to the man who has beaten not only the PREMIERS from last year, but also the runner's up................... YES GUYS AND GIRLS,............... We have now beaten the teams that faced off in the grand final last year - and we have THRASHED them both!

Secondly.

Whilst the congrats are out of the way, i still think Ratten has some issues he needs to address. (BUT - i'm starting to feel like he's doing this.) Saints were well off tonight (as were Geelong) and it seems we're still getting to scared to go forward and attack when it's late in the quarter. (it's almost as if we are too affraid to loose rather that to hungry to win???)

P.s
god i hope we get rid of this "Hold the ball up and kick backwards" crap - everytime we do it, it's odds on favourite that we'll concede a goal. :banghead: :banghead:

This is the first win for a number of seasons where our game plan sucessfully and and spectacularly gave us an clear advantage. ie the coaches materially out thought their opponents!

Clearly we learnt from the Collingwood game :thanks: (and the Bulldogs chip it around affair against the Saints) that the key weakness of a zone is the time needed to set it up. This can be and was exposed by quick ball movement and creating space.

Well done to the midfield coaches on helping Juddy get free and pump it in, I thought Waite for Henderson was also a key move, the extra experience and athleticism drew more defencive help and gave the crumbers more space. Houllihan's role in stopping their run off half back was also crtical in allowing our defensive set up to be more effective.

Were the Saints off tonight, I don't think so!

CB

I haven't been a Ratten fan but the results speak for themeselves. His done well winning 4 games. If we win next week-we will have arrived as a club. Let's see if we can back it up on a 6 day turn around.

Agree. However, it is also the coaching team's job to ensure that players enter the game with the right mindset and put in the required effort on a consistent basis.

We played Geelong at full strength (no excuses) Stkilda without Reiwoldt is a different proposition, however, we were able to break down their defensive gameplan where others have failed......basically both games are about as hard a test you can get. The challenge will be how we manage backing up and winning with injuries. We haven't proved ability to be consistent and win when things are not going our way.

I think Ratts' must have played the boys New Order's 1990 'World in Motion' during the build-up. I think he significantly borrowed from John Barnes' rap to prepare our game plan.

You've got to hold or give,
But do it at the right time,
You can be slow or fast,
But you must get to the line,
They'll always hit you and hurt you,
Defend and attack,
There's only one way to beat them,
Get 'round the back,
Catch me if you can,
Cos I'm the Carlton man,
And what you're looking at,
Is the master plan

...

And so on and so forth.

I disagree. It's true might we concede "a goal" with that strategy now, but much less chance of multiples. It's about avoiding run-ons against us, and we can't keep up the break-neck speed we start out with in quarters.

Maybe we should sack the people who want to sack Ratten?

Don't need too.

Not much noise coming from them at the moment
