Interesting to see Ratten dissapointed in how we overused our handballs yesterday - i aggree.

BUT, i thought this was largely due to us having nobody up forward when we won possesion in the midfield.

O'hAilpan kicked 5 goals so I think he was around. Plus at the start of the third quarter he started one side of the goal square and Kreuzer the other side. We needed to get it down there quickly for one on one and maybe that's what Ratts meant by stuffing around with handball. The saints will kill us next week if we do it again.

If you have big guys like O'hAilpin and Kruezer, kick it long. If they don't mark it will spill and are there better crumbers than Setanta's Little Helpers? That is, if they all play.

Ratten needs better assistants. It is a box full of inexperience. You either have an experienced head coach and green assitants or a green head coach and some experienced assistants.

As for Hendersen, who can teach him? I imagine Garlett and Yarran are well taught by Lappin. Who is the experienced Key Position Coach to guide Hendersen, White etc?

Pretty sure the same assitants yesterday were there against Geelong last week too. How did they go last week?

Hire Wayne Carey before he is named in the Hall of Fame.
Get him now!!!
It will do Carey wonders in terms of value he has to offer the AFL and the impending announcement.

I was thinking of this thread yesterday when White was just ineffective against Dawes (not through lack of effort IMO) - there was a brief moment where Jamo was on Dawes and matching pretty well.....
Then White was back on him and continued to be out played..... I wondered quite loudly why we moved him back, but then I though it was a probably a bit of a message to the kid that his effort was appreciated and we wanted him to keep working..... I'd say that paid off when he moved forward, because he kept finding ways to present and showed how how much he wanted it.....

Whether it was Ratts, not Ratts, or not even a conscious choice - I'd like to think it shows what confidence in players can do for you - and it gave me a different perspective on helping players through a hard day at the office if ever I go back to coaching....

Whatever the truth - it shows that there are probably 1000 different things the coaches are having to think about that none of us even bother about - "move him off him" is delightfully elegant when you're only trying to solve a problem in isolation! :)

Identify the experience around Voss, Scott & Hardwick.

EDIT: Fixed a name

But all I am questionning after today's game is whether 150 pts was part of the plan today. Did he voluntarily decide to have a shoot out?

If his plan is for us to be much more defensively minded and oriented, then today was a clear backward step for him and the club

I don't see why your question garnered such vitriol

His thread received vitriol because like many things VB starts as individual threads it was asinine, and remained that way. The response was definitely over the top, but not without cause.

what yesterday showed me was the difference between an average coach and an outstanding one. I might be viewing this through navy-blue tinted glasses, but to me, if I look at the two playing lists and assess them in terms of raw ability, I don't see much difference. However, Collingwood are so well-drilled and even their bottom six (who, on paper, don't seem that good) are able to execute the game plan. Conversely, we don't generally look as well-drilled (the Geelong win an obvious exception). I was a big Ratten fan as a player, I have supported him as a coach, but with Malthouse becoming available in 2012, I think it would be remiss of our Board not to try to secure him. This is not an anti-Ratten rant - just a view that we need better than good coaching to draw the maximum potential out of this list.

The Pies simply worked harder with and for the ball. Our mob only did it in spurts after doing it for four quarters the previous week. It was as simple as them having a mental edge. The players built up this contest like the Essendon* one and lost focus on the fundamentals, then exhausted themselves playing catch-up (although the Pies probably have a slight edge in fitness).

It's something Ratten needs to work with them on, that's for sure.

I think we underestimated the improvement in Dawes. He's developed into a power forward that can hold marks, it was noticeable on Anzac Day.

I have a few minutes... let me do it for you.

Voss:
http://www.lions.com.au/football%20oper ... fault.aspx
Quote:
Senior Coach – Michael Voss
High Performance Manager – Daniel Collins
Assistant Coaches – Adrian Fletcher, Jade Rawlings
Head of Development – Craig McRae
Leadership & Development Coach – Manny Lynch
Position / Development Coach – Beau McDonald

Last season they had Brittain, who had been coaching Zillmere for 4 seasons before Voss plucked him out of the wilderness. Out of that current mob, Adrian Fletcher is the only one who can claim to anything close to a wealth of experience, while Rawlings is recognised as talented.

Scott:
http://www.kangaroos.com.au/coaches/tab ... fault.aspx
Quote:
Scott
Darren Crocker
Shane Watson
Brett Allison
Jon Haines
Jason Lappin
John Lamont

Crocker has experience at Richmond & North, which speaks for itself really.

Allison was a development coach at Sydney, a club quite famous for not really developing its youth.

Lamont is another with a couple of years experience with the Roos.

Not much chop.

Hardwick:
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/staff%20me ... fault.aspx
Quote:
Head of Development - Tim Livingstone
Player Development Manager - Lauren Cooper
Senior Coach - Damien Hardwick
Assistant Coach - Wayne Campbell
Assistant Coach - Brendon Lade
Assistant Coach - Justin Leppitsch
Assistant Coach - Danny Daly
Opposition and List Analyst - Blair Hartley
Development coach, Coburg Coach - David Newett
Development coach - Tim Clarke

Campbell is a favourite son, as is Lade (who has virtually zero coaching experience) and Leppo is barely into the caper after being a favourite son at another club.

Daly worked under Laidley, originally coming from a broking background.

Hartley is Port's old recruitment manager; possibly an astute purchase if list analysis is his strength.

Newett was one of many coaches removed from North Melbourne as recommended by the board & football department at the end of last year. Speaks volumes.

Then there's our mob:
http://www.carltonfc.com.au/staff/tabid ... fault.aspx
Quote:
Senior Coach
Brett Ratten

Assistant Coaches
Mark Riley
Matthew Lappin
Brett Montgomery
Robert Harvey
Craig Bradley (part-time)

Development & Academy Manager
Darren Harris

Development Coaches
David Teague (Northern Bullants)
Mathew Capuano

Opposition Coach
Brett Munro

Riley was well regarded at Melbourne and only left after being told he'd gotten as far as he was going to get at Melbourne (who pays a pittance). Montgomery was at Port, Harris at West Coast, clubs with histories of being successful in recent years.

Harvey & Bradley have two of the longest AFL resumes you will ever see; playing through and surviving in multiple eras of football gives them a huge insight into the sport; unique in fact.

I think we stack up pretty well, but if you're going to be a pain, I have the pages for Freo & Essendon* if you need other examples.

White's body work is poor... Dawes is getting better but he's still not much chop.

Dawes is twice Whites size, poor match up.

Dawes, in bodybuilding lingo, 'is flowering huge'.

Next you tell us that we were critical of Lyon after he coached the Saints to ninth and fourth in his first two seasons.

Matthew rebuilt Collingwood to a flag in 3 1/2 years. He also rebuilt Brisbane to a flag in 3 years. Clarkson rebuilt Hawthorn to a flag in 4 years.

Time frames vary.

errors and turnovers killed us. simple as that. Take them out of the equation and we'd kick the goals we should have kicked, made the tackles we should have made and hit targets we intended to hit. We didn't and so turned the ball over and they have a really good run at scoring from seemingly every turnover. They were on fire.

I actually liked the way we played in patches. My exception being McLean. I'm a fan but he is not only slow but slower to dish out the quick handball in congestion at stoppages which is what I expected from him. He tends to like to bottle it up for another stoppage rather than move it on to our runners with quick clean hands.

Out: Henderson (needs a kick in the twos) McLean.
In: Waite, Grigg/Hadley (Grigg to run with Dal Santo)

Are you running along the lines of Malthouse is one of the best AFL coaches of the modern era because he's consistently thereabouts?

He won two flags after a team with a wealth of draft picks and concessions finally hit their straps.

For all the bluster about the great doyen that is Mick, he has failed to produce much more at Collingwood than his rookie tenure at the Bulldogs. He's good, but it's apparent that he still doesn't quite know how to get those last few sparks of inspiration to get his charges over the line.

Why else would he have such an enormous chip on his shoulder?
