Actually its not a good point about Easter Sunday.... Good Friday is far more significant than Sunday

As an atheist I find the Sunday part of the story is much more impressive than the Friday part of the story.

Lots of people have died for other people but next to none have then vanished and shot off somewhere else.

My take on it is that it shouldn't become an annual "blockbuster" with the same two teams every year.

With Easter always falling somewhere in the first 3 rounds of the season I think Good Friday would be the perfect stage for a Grand Final rematch with the Premiership team getting the gate takings.

The GVFL kicked off their season with TWO games on Good Friday. If it's good enough for country leagues surely it's good enough for the AFL. For non-religious folk like myself Good Friday is possibly the most boring day of the year. Everything is closed and I need an excuse to not do gardening/household stuff that the missus will begrudgingly accept.

Also the Murray League and the Bendigo League. Echuca United and Moama play a local derby every Good Friday. They get around 3000 approx each year. Which by Murray League standards makes it the best attended H/A game for the season. Supply and Demand !

I'm a religious person albeit one who doesn't believe in the church. Society has changed and the AFL keeps saying it's moving with the times yet sees fit not to have games on Good Friday. I think it's time now. I remember over 20 years ago, my father would not shave, not allow the TV or radio on. He couldn't give a stuff now. He watches TV, goes out. Peoples views have changed. Let's play the game with the AFL contributing $2 for every spectator to the RCH.

If we can get a Carlton Hawthorn game each year on good Friday I would lock it in. Though people say other teams should benefit, I say stuff em. Collingwood and Essendon* have a monopoly on Anzac day, we need to look after ourselves. For the last 3 seasons we had the opening game which is far from a specticle, we still draw over 70k people, which is what the AFL want. Just a pity it's always richmonds home game and we miss out on the spoils.

Good Friday footy... Awesome.

It's the only day of the season I watch Rugby League. Why ?

Because there's no real footy.

Bring it on.

For the religious folk we could have the Pope address each team at half time and umps could wear nuns outfits

Lets face it. Good Friday footy will happen one day, lets get the Blues involved when it does.

They played a game in Tassie on Good Friday.
The ball was bounced.

A 7.2 quake was felt in Tijuana.

That should be proof enough that footy on Good Friday is not a good idea.

Or it could also mean they should throw the footy up instead of bounce it.

I'm all for Good Friday football. Would be fantastic for the interstaters out there. Footy on Friday, then have three days to enjoy Melbourne.

Bring it on I say !! And as for the point re sport on a good Friday, if it's good enough for the Italians to play Serie A or B on Good Friday then its good enough for us !!

yep i'd be in melbourne for easter every year if that was the case - as I was this year and last year.

4 day weekend, twilight blockbuster carlton v hawks on friday arvo/evening.

then 3 days to enjoy melbourne and the international comedy festival.

nice.

I just can't believe it even needs to be debated.

The world didn't fall apart with the Storm playing last Friday, did it?

I agree I am not sure of the principals around it, sport is played on every other public holiday in the world (in the States they have NBA games Christmas night).

What would Jesus do on Good Friday in Melbourne? I suspect he would want to go to the footy.

I just can't see how a game of any sport can discredit any religious day, it makes no sense whatsoever. Also all other sports play on Good Friday, is the AFL more holy?

If the Carlton v Hawthorn game were to go ahead, he'd probably wear #5 for the navy blue and start on the ball just like every other week.

We should ask Gary Ablett Snr to adjudicate. If he says it's ok to play, then the AFL should allow it.

And the umpires would crucify him just like every other week.

Bluehammer sets it up and woof hits it out the stadium.
