Three !!!!!

(I'm counting not getting beaten by 20 goals as a moral victory).

Yes. The AFL took over the VFLW (essentially) this year. The Victorian Women's Football League was founded in 1981 with 4 teams. It grew rapidly in the 90s and by the 2016 season there were 60 teams across 47 clubs and 3 divisions.

AFL Victoria took over the league in 2013 and said that for the 2017 season 10 teams should split off to make the VFLW which they would manage while the other teams went back to local and regional leagues around the state with 80 other clubs.

The premier division in the VFLW up until recently has been 10 teams.

Now, for the 2016 season they aligned with the (mens) VFL competition by AFL Victoria and re-branded as the VFLW. In 2017 the first season of the AFLW happened, so now the AFL was properly involved with women's football and so for the 2018 VFLW season they really properly aligned with the AFL.

They raised the price of admission for clubs, forcing out the smaller legacy community clubs, who have joined local leagues, with some AFLW players continuing to play for their old clubs.

The VFLW is now a 13 team competition for 2018.

Name | Affiliation | entered competition

Carlton Blues (AFL operated) 2018
Casey Demons (VFL, AFL affiliation) 2018
Collingwood Magpies (AFL operated) 2018
Darebin Falcons (Independent club) 2016
Essendon* Bombers (AFL operated) 2018
Geelong Cats (AFL operated) 2017
Hawthorn Hawks (AFL Operated, formerly Box Hill) 2017
Melbourne University (Independent, AFL affiliated: North Melbourne) 2016
Northern Territory (NEAFL Operated, non-affiliated by an AFL club but contains Crows AFLW players) 2018
Richmond Tigers (AFL operated) 2018
Southern Saints (AFL Operated: Saints, VFL partnership: Frankston) 2018
Western Bulldogs (Independent, AFL affiliated & co-branded: Bulldogs) 2016
Williamstown (VFL operated) 2018

Former Teams:
Cranbourne Eagles (2016–2017)
Diamond Creek (2016–2017)
Eastern Devils (2016–2017)
Knox Falcons (2016)
North Geelong Magpies (2016)
Seaford Tigers (2016–2017)
St Kilda Sharks (2016–2017)

So now it is a seconds competition for the AFLW (essentially) with all the clubs except Williamstown and Darebin to be admitted to the AFLW over the next few years. Of course, it runs out of alignment with the AFLW so it isn't quite a reserves competition, more of a development side. Only 12 AFLW players are allowed to play in each match, although more can exist on the teams list. So clubs will use the league as a place to develop new players, potential AFLW recruits and code-hoppers to get them introduced to AFL.

The TAC Cup is the thirds/Under 19s competition.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian ... FL_Women's

In short:
Yep, we have the Northern Blues in the VFL which are aligned with Carlton football club for the men, and now we have the Carlton Blues in the VFLW, owned and run by us, at Princes Park, not Preston like the men in the northern blues.

... end wall of text.

This week Carlton play the Darebin Falcons at Ikon Park.
Hopefully we can show some form. We rather scared Geelong last week, even though we couldn't clinch the win.

Lost by 8 goals. To add insult to injury Nat Exon was Darebin's best. Mouncey kicked 3 goals.

CARLTON v. NT THUNDER

Round 6 – 16/06/2018 12:00PM
RAMS Arena

Carlton
B: 40. K. Harvey, 12. S. Last, 24. R. Hicks
HB: 34. A. Chuot, 44. D. Pedersen, 56. C. Williams
C: 17. T. Lucas-Rodd, 37. B. Schultz, 90. B. Walker
HF: 20. C. Bromage, 50. J. Borg, 38. L. McCarthy
F: 27. K. Cox, 42. C. Hardeman, 41. K. Cunico
R: 16. B. Moody, 35. S. Li, 26. S. Audley
Int: 82. N. Burns, 55. C. Dalton, 11. J. Hosking, 45. R. King

Emg: 33. G. Green, 10. S. Hosking, 66. T. Plowman, 63. O. Vesely

23P: 15. I. Gietzmann

In: G. Green, O. Vesely, I. Gietzmann, S. Audley, R. Hicks, S. Last, A. Chuot

Out: M. Keryk, K. Shierlaw, B. Kennedy, K. Harrington

Of the 4 changes I doubt we'll see Keryk or Shierlaw again. :( We lost Arnell a week or two back, just before it was announced that she was traded. I haven't seen her named in any VFLW team since, but I could have missed it. I am human, even if my students usually think otherwise. :) We haven't seen Vescio for a couple of weeks either. Don't now what happened there, but she is definitely play for us in the AFLW in 2019.

NT Thunder

R: 30. R. Metcalfe, 3. A. Foley, 28. R. Forth
Int: 10. S. Barnett, 41. A. Chittick, 21. K. Irvine, 23. S. Mauboy

Emg: 44. M. Johnston

23P: 49. M. Gault

In: L. Motlop, M. Johnston, C. Cramey, A. Chittick, S. Armitstead, K. Streader, R. Metcalfe, E. Swanson, C. Randall, S. Allan, K. Irvine, J. McCormick

Out: A. Hatchard, J. Hickey, D. Varnhagen, J. Mules, J. Hewett, R. Wallace, M. Rajcic, T. Thorn, E. Jones, L. Roberts, J. Anderson

Vescio has been over in NYC for the last 2 weeks or so.
It seems to me they are using the VFLW season for trials/practice. I don't think trying to win the comp is high on the agenda at this stage

The way they treat it is ordinary, to say the least. The number of changes each week as players leave the club are crippling. Do we not want to win games at any level?
