AFL mulls venue change for women's competition opener due to popularity

Quote:
Growing interest in the AFL women’s competition may force the league to move next month’s season opener between Carlton and Collingwood to a bigger venue. The traditional AFL club rivals had been scheduled to face off under lights at Melbourne’s 7,000-capacity Olympic Park on 3 February.

But AFL game development manager Simon Lethlean has confirmed the league will consider moving the prime-time clash to nearby Princes Park, which should be able to hold between 17,000 and 20,000 fans....

The AFL wishes to advise the opening match of the inaugural @NAB @AFLWomens Competition will now be played at Ikon Park.

Serves the Filth right for having a crap venue.
More impetus for us to campaign for Princes Park to be given a much needed face lift, and used as the showpiece venue for the AFLW.

Under lights, better infrastructure and no council approval needed....

Luckily the AFL stubbornise to give us nothing saved this from being a farcical embarrassment.
I hate this organisation so much it isn't even funny any more.

I understand that entry is free. Is that correct?

Does that mean its a first in best dressed situation for seats?

anyone know what time the gates open?

I'm not sure how great the womens league will be, not yet a convert. (hope to be though).
But its a Carlton day in history, so how great would it be to fill the stadium to the top with navy blue and make a statement. Doesn't matter the game, we are Carlton and if it involves our club, we are their with passion! Go Blues

Will the game be televised? Or available on line at some stage?

Thanks but not helpful for those of us OS. The AFL website is not accepting new subscriptions as they are currently haggling over tv rights. Hopefully a kind soul will post the game on you tube.

Here's hoping Taff!!

Currently in Bangkok for a few days and would kill to see this game just to be part of history (plus you knowI love it when we beat Collingwood or Essendon*, and I reckon we have a good chance here).

Have been checking out all the advertised games to be broadcast in the sports bars in Sukhumvit but haven't had any success yet. Even the Australian Network doesn't start broadcasting the AFLW games until Saturday.
