Darcy Vescio was BOG for Darebin Falcon's in the VFL Women's premiership on Sunday, second year in a row apparently. Sounds like the Blues have landed a good one.

Yep she was given best on ground. IMO Paxman was a stand out. A bit like Hope given BOG in the televised game. No way was she best on with her 4 goals out the back. Breanna Davey was clearly best in ground in that game. Expect a lot of players with a back story to get all the limelight

A great get. Nat Exon was a very talented and skilful junior footballer.
A perfect example of why we need womens footy. She was lost too the game once she turned 13 as she was no longer allowed to play against the boys.
She only got back into footy a few months ago but she'll be great value.
Sister of Frankston player and former Oakleigh Chargers captain, Ryan.

Pick 3 in the Draft to us.
With GWS and Brisbane with picks 1 and 2, if I'm not mistaken, this means we get first choice of the best talent within Victoria, as Clubs can only draft from players within their state.

Paying $5k per year doesn't really entice someone to relocate

So who do we want? So far we have a utility forward (Darcy Vescio - marquee), key defender/mid (Bri Davey - marquee), inside mid (Lauren Arnell - pre draft selction), ruck/kf (Kate Shierlaw - rookie) and outside mid (Nat Exon - rookie). My initial thought is probably good to grab a ruck early as they are going to be hard to find I suspect and we don't have one except a rookie. I don't know if Selina Goodman (Qld) or Ellyse Gamble (Tas) are going into the Vic draft (there has been some speculation) but if not maybe Beth Kearney or Alison Downie. Later on we might be looking to take Assistant coach Jane Lange as a player as well given she has been a playing coach this year - don't know if she is planning to play on but it would be very hard to retire with the league just starting you would think. It will be important to get a good age spread as well as positional spread. The temptation will be to load up on younger girls (min draft age is 18) so as to get longer term players but you will also want some experience as well. It amazes me how much info I have managed to pick up without really meaning to - about the only girls footy I watch is my daughters local youth girls team and most of the players in that league who have league potential talent tend to move on to better competitions, so I have seen a few of the girls over the years (Ellie Blackburn once dominated a youth girls game for Cranbourne against my daughter's team like I have never seen a game dominated before or since) but not a lot. Still with the demo games, nationals, youth national etc you can get to know a few names. There will be 76 players drafted from the Victorian pool and that's probably about as many as I know - not suggesting the 2 lists would coincide. Will be interesting to see how lists are built.

Not sure if this is the right spot but the Blueseum needs a volunteer to flesh out the Womens team section on site. A number of past leaders on the site have fallen away in recent years - one actually passed away unfortunately - so we are short staffed and could do with a hand. If you are keen please PM me on this site.

The AFLW section of the Blueseum is now up and running - we have had a few expressions of interest to assist but the site will always welcome new ideas and workers! Keep it in mind please!

Quote:
As the sun set over Ikon Park and over 24,000 fans packed the stadium to witness the first ever AFLW match between Carlton and Collingwood, it was always going to be an extraordinary night.

Football fans knew its significance – it changed the game forever.

That historic night has now been recognised nationally, crowned ‘Moment of the Year’ at the 2017 Women in Sport Awards on Wednesday night.

Now in its seventh year, the prestigious awards celebrate Australian female athletes and their achievements over the past 12 months.

Held in the Grand Ballroom at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, Blues AFLW captain Lauren Arnell and Collingwood AFLW player Meg Hutchins accepted the award on behalf of both clubs.

“There were so many amazing moments in women’s sport this year, so to win this award is just incredible,” Arnell said.

“It was such an honour and a privilege to play in that first game and be part of that moment in time – it’s a night I will truly never forget.
