A tilted set of goals complete with goal square?

WOMEN’S AFL will be 16-a-side after the AFL Commission approved the significant rule change for the inaugural competition.

The Herald Sun revealed last month 16-a-side plus six on the bench was the league’s preferred option for its debut AFLW season starting in late January or early February.

The rule change initially received mixed reviews from players, with some not keen on changing the fabric of the game, but almost 80 per cent of players surveyed from the women’s exhibition match on September 3 supported the trialled rule.

The reduced numbers on the field appeared to open the game up.

AFL general manager of game and market development Simon Lethlean said the rule was signed off after extensive research and consultation during 10 exhibition games this year.

The AFLW competition will also use a size 4 football — full size is 5 — and there will be 15-minute quarters plus time on after goals and major injuries.

We can agree to disagree MF...I thought just a little bit of you would have been pleased that the club had the guts to go through with this. They didn't waiver once. says to me Carlton is on another lower level orbit/trajectory than the swans hawks geelongs - we are sitting under the shadow of city hall not shining a light and being the antagonist to the afl which is when we are at our best

“All the games last week rated higher than the A-League (soccer) except for the big Melbourne clash. It’s a new league and everyone is getting behind it. It is bringing new people to the AFL.

“It’s a great beginning and we look forward to it being there for years to come.”

The league has already brought in a father-daughter rule which means the daughters of AFL players are linked to their AFLW clubs.

Those men needed only to play one AFL game to qualify their daughter for the club or clubs they played for.

BEST OF LUCK Haha...packed house. They've paid their way this season already. Big difference between tonight's game and the exhibition games in previous years highlights lack of depth which will take many years to fill but outside of NSW and QLDi think soccer would have more to worry about than the AFL. I reckon Vescio will be gracing ads on TV consistently well before any A-League players (except for those coming back looking to top up their retirement nest eggs)

AFLW will only grow and with that are opportunities to build a truly great inclusive club supported and followed by a great mix of people. Yet another tick of approval from me for the current board and the direction they're taking the club in. Just need to hang tough this year, as I also expect to really bottom out on the field but we will do so playing kids with the eye firmly on the future

I suppose any place where there is large amounts of money or prestigious awards involved, the AFL has to protect the integrity of the code for its members. a 6'3" 100Kg person who is effectively a 'man' could easily win the comp B&F year on year. Good call.

Hmm, so it’s alright for her to smash through the girls/women in the local leagues, but we don’t want her doing it in the AFLW in front of a large television audience. So what is it AFL, are we pregnant or just a little bit pregnant.

I wonder how long it is before female athletes stop biting their tongue for fear of retribution, and start complaining about "men" competing against them and robbing them of medals/opportunities?
