Some great skills there, and impressive willingness and physicality on display. Love it

My daughter's BFF is 13 and a gun player. I wouldn't be surprised if she makes it to this league. She won the B&F in the predominantly boys side last year.

Swans too strong for Giants
Image

Quote:
THE SYDNEY Swans comfortably accounted for cross-town rivals the GWS Giants in a women's exhibition match at the SCG on Saturday, winning by 29 points.

Although both teams were able to get the ball inside their forward 50 zones consistently, it was the Swans who made the most of their opportunities, with excellent ball use and strong marking.

In contrast, the Giants missed chances, their rushed delivery leading to a number of turnovers. They also had difficulty defending, especially when kicking out from goal. On three occasions a Giants defender kicked out straight to an opposition player, resulting in three goals for the winning side.

Nicola Barr was outstanding for the Swans, collecting 16 kicks and sending the ball inside 50 five times. Fellow midfielders Monique Hollick (25 disposals) and Maddie Collier (14) provided class and displayed excellent decision-making skills throughout the match.

American import Kim Hemenway top-scored with three goals. The 31-year-old (pictured above), who flew into Sydney from the United States on Thursday, set up the Swans in the first quarter when she kicked two of the game's first three goals. Teammate Jacinda Barclay also played her role up forward, booting two goals.

Territory surge home to topple Tassie

Probably the whitest NT team you'll see for some time:

Yup, that's what happens when elite athletes don't have elite training opportunities: I don't think there's been many non-contact knee injuries in the AFL in the last 20 years.

Radical women's footy rule trial could be a game changer for the AFL

"The modified rules to be trialled in women's lightning series

1. 16 players a side

2. 15-minute quarters, no time on

3. Last touch rule: Free kick awarded against a team for any kick or handball that goes out of bounds without being touched. A player who spoils the ball, picks up the ball and carries it over the boundary line or taps the ball over the line will not be penalised – as long as she is not regarded as taking the ball out of play deliberately.

4. High density rule: Two forwards and their opponents must remain inside 50 at all stoppages.

5. Protected area: Size of the protected area around the mark to be 10 metres, while umpires will also give a stricter adjudication on ruling on players engaged in a handover of who is guarding the mark."

Quote:
Applauded by AFL football operations boss Mark Evans as a progressive trial relevant to all levels of men and women's football, the rule changes aim to increase game speed, flow and scoring.

...

"It just might be that through a trial like this we could find that there's a better way to play football in the future," Evans told Fairfax Media.

"These sorts of trials are a brilliant opportunity not just to see what works for the female's game but also as an extension of some of the work we've been looking at around the country for all football."

The rule modifications pioneered by AFLNT and female footballers in the top end have been written and developed in consultation with the AFL.

...

The 'last touch' rule is being trialled in men's competition this year in the South Australian National Football League.

On the matters of team size and quarter duration however, Fairfax understands the AFL still envisages the national women's competition beginning in 2017 featuring 18 players a side and 20-minute terms without time-on.

So a rudimentary off-side rule, 40 minutes shaved off the game length... is the AFL trying to finally beat the NRL into submission by becoming them?

The last touch rule is going to be mental to adjudicate alongside deliberate out of bounds. Just make it last touch under any circumstances if you want to bring that in.

I don't think the women's game will be fast-paced enough to necessitate less players on the field, so that should only come in if there's a genuine concern about numbers (maximum 440 required at this stage).

80 minute games are going to be shit, let alone 60 minute ones. The zoning rule is reasonable, but get ready for offside traps and 50m set shot specialists.

it's going to be bigger than the men's game, will be self funded due to the large crowds and sponsors lining up to get high exposure
I'm very excited

You're basically calling Aussie Rules a backwater sport when you say that

In that you're suggesting there isn't enough interest in the market for that sport that a women's league can draw sufficient interest.

Is it ok to just wait and see? So far it's been impressive. No one was expecting it to be better than the men's league, at least not athletically; it's just a league in its own right.

What's the crime here?

this decision by the Carlton Board to file an application for a womens team is a continuation of incompetent decisions by this incompetent Board

it will be a drag on the clubs finances and resources and the existing 6.4m debt

this will not grow the membership base for women

we need to get the mens team up to standard first

this incompetent Board makes decisions from recommendations by its CEO

and so, this is a major mistake by Trigg. when he leaves carlton we are stuck with this decision.

Please note - Hawthorn decided not to apply for a womens league licence - that is a club that knows what its doing...

Didn't say there was a crime, trying to go straight into a professional league from such a low base is ludicrous. Shouldn't be a national comp either.
I say this because of the costs involved
