i was just thinking of how we beat this chipping shit that clubs (sydney) do that really pisses me off is now i might be wrong and i might sound stupid but here it is:

MAN UP !!!!

gee is it that hard i mean if everyone had a man and was on their man than that chipping crap would not happen. Am i right or wrong?

Well yes and no.

Teams that do that now simply have patience.

Many of the blocks/screens and leading techniques that used to be used primarily in the forward line are now being used in the middle of the ground.

That is take a mark, hold up play and wait for an option to present.

Even the best manning up cannot prevent players using these techniques to get the ball, especially in the wide expanses of the middle of the ground.

If a team is disciplined and skilled enough they can execute this tactic and even manning up will not work if they are patient and skilled enough.

I've been wondering why screens are legal when shepherding more than 5m from the ball isn't.
Often when you see a leading forward with a few metres on his opponent it's because he was given a screen in the goal square. Collingwood use this tactic with Rocca.

Mark Williams would never score without screens.

I think they just don't want to open that can of worms cause then they'd have to police it.

The whole shepherding rule is an anomaly, as you've highlighted. Why can you shepherd when the ball is within 5m, yet you can't back into a player while going for a mark? Why can you take out a guy chasing the ball carrier by shepherding/bumping him?

They're not. The umpires just never call them. Technically, it is a shepherd more than 5m away from the ball, and a free kick should be awarded to the blocked player. However, the umpires are usually watching the ball, and miss it.

Which is the WHOLE POINT of 3 field umpires.

Maybe the boundary umps should be allowed to police shepherding in "screens"

the addition of more umpires capable of making decision will lead more to more shit decisions and poor intepretations of inconsistent rules.

i fail to see how 3 umpires, one in the backline, one in the middle and the other in the forward line aren't capable of picking up when a screen is set, thats their job? apart from picking ridiculous free kicks and basically getting in the way of the game of course.

Sydney shepharded their way to a premiership last year. They are experts at blocking players out of marking contests.
