Like I said, the fact that they were shots at goal just made them more visible.
He wasn't the worst offender, by any stretch.
Yes, 4 shots on goal at least shows he's having the shots, but to get a return of 25% is far worse than an "off day". Maybe I just expect more from them, as they are professional football players who practice this kind of thing ad nauseam.
A forward pocket crumber is a bit like a full-forward - you don't get many opportunities and you have to nail most of them or you aren't doing your job. Talk to a Tigers fan about Richo's kicking for goal. Or a Bulldogs supporter about Rawlings. Or a Roos supporter about Harding. Davies' efforts yesterday were just not up to AFL standard
Eddie Betts has the kicking skills and the awareness of where the goals are to maximise the return from limited opportunities. He has the pace to goal from half-chances, and he has the ability to kick goals across his body, and not just when he can run straight at goal. Amazingly, he also shows incredible team-orientation. You wouldn't see Milne pull back from a kick on goal and pop up a short pass to a loose player like Eddie did yesterday.
Davies has kicked a few in the past, but I don't remember many of them being snaps. Or even running shots. He took a few marks against Collingwood and kicked some important goals from set shots.
But even as a marking half-forward, Lappin is well ahead of him, particularly running in from 50. When you miss sodas like he did yesterday, he gets a strike or two against his name. Unless this is shown to be an aberration, he might have to be tried in the midfield instead.
It is too early to call this one, so I'm not calling for his head yet. But he better show that yesterday was just a very bad day. After all, TLo is in the wings, and his kicking for goal is one of his strengths.
