I know we often talk about "politics in footy" but this article puts a whole new light on it! I'm a labor man thru and thru, but I still would not be at all opposed to having someone a bit more right wing within the upper echelons of the AFL if it would help our cause! AFL on the left wing, needs to centre the ball http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/real ... 10357.html "THE AFL Commission decided that it needed some belated gender balance, and so the game's ruling body cast the net and finally settled on Sam Mostyn, a Sydney lawyer with impressive political and business connections in NSW. Bluey, Do you think it would help our cause because the perception would be that the people in power at Carlton are right wingers? My view is that we are lucky the AFL is full of left wingers, they are more likely to give handouts to the needy! |

I think it's a big load of crap. Footy is pretty much the one thing, especially in Melbourne, where political differences are dropped at the door of the club, or the gates on match day. OK, We're known as the team of Robert Menzies, BA Santamaria, Mal Fraser and political aspirant John Elliott, but look at Essendon*, with Costello as #1 ticket holder. If the AFL worries about so-called "political balance" of the commissioners, then it will introduce an era of jobs-for-the-boys type commissioners in the way that the ABC has political appointments. it will be the death of a decent commission as we know it. |
