We're back!!
Hello and welcome to the return of the least most anticipated statistical column on the internet - Wolfister's Weekly one cent stats... and this is the big 50th Episode of the one cent stats! As a treat the team down at Wolfister Inc (the big blue office at the bottom end of town) have put together a banner for us all to run through, so hold on a sec while I just attend to that...
And we're back. Fifty episodes hey... it all started back on August 2, 2002 when we played Collingwood... if I remember correctly, the key stat that day was that we were undefeated against Collingwood at the MCG in 2002... then they belted us by 108 points. Actually, the stats don't read that well for the 49 weeks of the one cent stats. We've won only 14 matches (28.6%) at PM-1489. However we've also won 5 of our last 10 (OM-173), and 7 of our last 12 (-157)... so the stats are on the improve!
Moving on to the big opening round clash against the Kangaroos. This will be the 140th time we've met, with Carlton winning 93 of those encounters (66.9%) at PM+2178. Interestingly, Carlton and North have never drawn - however 3 of our last 4 clashes have been decided by under 10 points. We've won 2 of our last 5 (PM-131) and 4 of our last 10 (PM-178) which isn't too bad considering our recent couple of years... however we've also only won 4 of our last 14 (PM-338). At the Docklands, we've only won 1 of our 4 starts against the Roos (Pagan's first clash against them in 2003) - at PM-153 - thanks of course to the infamous "strike" match, also in 2003.
Round 1 hasn't been the happiest of hunting grounds for the Blues over history. We've won 58 of our 107 Round 1s (54.2%) at PM+832. This makes Round 1 only our 20th most successful home and away round. We've won 2 of our last 5 Round 1s at PM-104 (however we have lost our last 3 at PM-145) and 5 of our last 10 (PM+89). This will be our first Round 1 match in Melbourne since 2002 - our only other Round 1 at the Docklands - where we lost to St Kilda by 4 goals. This will be the 6th time that we've met North in Round 1, winning 4 of the previous 5 (PM+211). The last time we met in Round 1, as has been discussed a bit this week, was back in 1984 when we belted them by 137 points out at Waverley - the day that Warren Ralph, Tom Alvin, Wayne Blackwell and Frazer Murphy all made their debuts.
This will be our only game in March for the year, which is probably just as well as March is our 7th ranked month (ranked only behind October), winning just 13 of our 26 starts at PM+34. On March 26 however, we've played only twice, for one win (against Richmond in the "Grand Final replay" of 1983 where Mark Buckley kicked a bag) and one loss (in 2000 against a rampaging Collingwood by 73 points) (PM-13). This ranks March 26 at equal 133rd in our most successful dates (out of 199). The 26th of the month also doesn't have the best of vibes, winning only 37 of our 68 starts (54.4%) at PM+323, making the 26th our 23rd most successful date. Five of those 68 starts have been against North - all losses, except for our last 26th clash (both against them and against anyone) at the Docklands in 2003... in fact, we are undefeated at the Docklands on the 26th of any month!
Till next week remember that 72% of the Dolphins at Sea World in Orlando support Richmond.
Wolf Out!
