what do we reckon? Mckernan out, Thompson in? McKernan still in doubt We should win the midfield and get plently of ball forward to Fat Boy Slim and the Fev. If Houla is injured - more pressure put on the depleted backline. Digby at CHB? Thoughts? |

A well researched response by an ex TCer, Cammo, can be found at another site. Here is what he had to say... Quote: M.I.A
Carlton will be without Brett Thornton and Brad Fisher. Anthony Koutoufides is still in doubt. Kangaroos will be missing Daniel Motlop, and possibly Corey McKernan, which can only be considered a bonus to Dean Laidley's men. Key Match Ups Carlton will approach their key match-up's on the Kangaroos' tall forwards with the most supreme caution, given that their forward structure is still relatively unknown at this stage. Will they play Rocca, Thompson and Petrie on the ground all at the one time? In the absence of Brett Thornton this may be a very likely scenario. I'd expect Livingston to go to Sav, Karl Norman to take Drew Petrie and as to who will take Thompson is a very hard one indeed, I'd expect the job to go to Digby Morrell first up, with Ian Prendergast as the 4th option, the In Case of Emergency would be shifting Lance Whitnall to CHB, which really would signal alarm bells in the Carlton camp. In the midfield, the influence of the 2 Daniel's, Harris and Wells will need to be nullified. I see Jordan Bannister as being given the first crack at Daniel Wells, with Trent Sporn and Callum Chambers as the back up plans. I think that Heath Scotland will be opposed to Daniel Harris, whilst not closely checking Harris, but certainly attempting to match him for effectiveness. If this doesn't work, and Harris is able to get the ball down to the 3 big talls, then perhaps Cory McGrath will be summoned, who will be more than likely opposed to Brent Harvey at the opening bounce. Kangaroos - Unlike most of Carlton's previous opponents to date, the Kangaroos have options as to who will take on the most dominate forward combination in the pre-season in Fevola and Whitnall. Laidley is most likely to start Leigh Brown on Lance Whitnall, which would be an interesting duel, given their similiar builds and game style, whilst Leigh Colbert may get the job on Fevola, as I cannot see Shannon Watt being given such a big job on the in-form forward of the competition first up. Both Watt and Glenn Archer remain as other options, I expect them to take the 3rd floating tall, whether that be Adrian DeLuca or Jarrad Waite whilst rotating off the bench. Laidley's attempts to curb the brilliance of Matthew Lappin will start with the largely underrated Troy Makepeace, who is as good a chance to leave the dangerous Lappin accountable as any in the league. Brady Rawlings and Scott Camporeale will most likely resume their battles, with Rawlings having a slight edge over Camporeale from last year. This would leave Michael Firrito to possibly tag Nick Stevens, assuming he will make the 22 after a flying start to 2004 which ended prematurely with Port Melbourne. Keys To Victory Carlton - The same that has procured victory the last 4 weeks- giving Fev and Lance a huge supply of the ball in the air and them converting. That rebounding backline will be tested to cover the loss of Thornton, but if the returning Karl Norman is able to cover for him, and given his form for the Bullants against Box Hill yesterday, it seems that is exceptionally plausible. Kangaroos - For the Kangaroos to get up here, their forward line needs to click right from the get go. With an undersized backline that lacks options opposing the likes of Thompson, Rocca and Petrie, if a score is converted, then we may have an upset on our hands. Prediction - Seeing too many comparisons between Carlton of '05 and the Saints of '96, in winning the pre-season competition by surprise, then going out and playing Nth in the first round minus a key player and getting a hiding. A loss would do the Blues the world of good, in bringing some of our younger players back to earth and realising the real task at hand. Cannot see Carlton being able to restrict the Kangaroos' key forwards whilst being able to kick the scores they have at the Dome in recent weeks. Kangaroos by 5, also in a thriller. |

Sounds about right. But surely Stevens rates a mention? I would put their midfield on about a par with ours, but we have a stronger forward line and probably enough defensive options to hold them. Wells has been massively overrated by pundits this pre-season IMO with a number of media types tipping him for the Brownlow. He is good and capable of breaking games open with his brilliance but not developed enough to compete consistently with the likes of Judd etc. Nonetheless, if we do not keep a close eye on him he will hurt us. Let's hope that unlike the corresponding game against North last year a ridiculous series of umpiring mistakes does not cost us the game. |

Kangaroos by 5 points??? No wonder he was banned!! ![]() North having 3 tall forwards represents quantity, not neccesarily quality. Petrie is struggling bigtime and is copping flak of Roos supporters for his efforts. Mind you, he'll probably fire this week. ![]() The midfield is the area this game will be decided. Last year Simpson and Grant were their highest possession winners in both games. Simpson gathered 11 clearances in round 1 and we lost. He gathered 4 clearances in the return bout and we won. No coincidence. Grant had 13 ball recieves on each occasion. He cuts you up too much to give him that latitude. Our forward line is more potent than Norths, we just need to win our share of the midfield and equal their inside 50 entries. If we can enter 50 as often as them, I'd expect our forward efficiency to give us a comfortable win. |

Hopefully McKernan comes up for Saturday to make it a 23-21 contest our way. I think we should win comfortably but with the Roos record of starting seasons off strongly I think we'll win by 4 goals. |

I think Barnaby will spend a lot of time down back helping out against their big forwards. If ,as it seems, Mckernan is out who will carry their ruck. This may give us an advantage allowing more game time for Prenda in the middle. Quietly confident we have them covered in skill, physicality and with a better coach I say a win by 27 points |

The Kangas have a potent foward line with Rocca and Thompson this leaves Petrie to be the danger man he now no longer has the first best defender he will have the the third in our case teague (to short) maybe Karl or Prenda you would think Livo would take thompson as he would be to quick for Diggers and Diggers will play on Rocca. I think you will see us getting many players down back again and running hard off the half back line, being at the dome it will come down to who has the best half back line on the day. Im not convinced about us yet, we were primmed for the wizzard cup and plenty of work went into winning it. A tightly contested game with the winner winning by 15 points. |

Pagan will call their bluff if they start with a big forward line and keep our defence unchanged except for Diggers filling in for Billy Bob. Our goals will continue to come from rebounding the ball out of defence quickly and into the forward line with speed and precision thus giving us every oportunity to kick a high winning score. |

I think there are two people outside the usual crop of 'stars' who need to have good games to ensure Carlton victory: 1. Justin Davies 2. Callum Chambers If both these guys have good games, Carlton will win, because they will add extra headaches to the Roos. In the absence of Thornton, expect French to be dropping in the backline a lot, and Carlton will again be pushing the Roos to take their kicks for goal along the boundary line rather than the corridor. Ian Prendergast to use his athleticism in a permanent defensive role. This is of course just my opinion. I have the Roos as wooden spoon contenders in 2005. I think they are one dimensional and apart from 4 or 5 decent players (Troy Makepeace is a threat, Wells, Grant, Sinclair and Harris the others), don't have the fire that Carlton has. If Carlton maintain the intensity that they showed in the Wizz Fizz cup, they will win. However, this game is being played at the MCG, and this might give the Roos an advantage if Carlton are too comfortable under the roof. I still expect Carlton to post a reasonable victory on the weekend, only because I think the Roos are so bad. They might prove me wrong. Carlton by 22 points to get off to a great start, and move onto the injury ravaged Essendon*. |
