Post subject: | Optus Oval No More???? |
I dont think its been posted elsewhere, however as at COB 31st December 2005 - the naming rights for Optus Oval have officially ended (point raised on Rumour File on 3AW this morning - not really a rumour but common knowledge). Anyone know what is happening with regards to the nomenclature of the Oval or are we going back to referring to it as the entire precinct of Princes Park??? ![]() |

I Can announce now, that under a licensing arrangement, it will be known as The Potato Scallop Princes Park. All bodes well for a bright future! |

To me, SOS, and I'm sure thousands like me - it always has been. While I understand the necessity of doing it sometimes, I hate to see the heritage of the Carlton Football Club sold to the highest bidder. |

The good news is of course is that we did not lose Otus as a major sponsor. |

Princes Park Royal Parade Parkville Postal Address PO Box 83 Carlton North Victoria 3054 This will be interesting for me, and many others around my age.. While I've always known it as Princes Park (and that name has often slipped out of my mouth) it's always officially been Optus Oval ever since I started following football. Tradition aside (sorry Pat), I am happy that Optus have been such close sponsors of the club for so long, and will be continuing their association with us in the future. |

I don't think I'll be able to think of it solely as Princes Park for a while. It took me about 2 years to move from Colonial Stadium and that was only in place for a couple of years |

The is a small article in 'The Hun' this morning (not in the on-line edition) about the finish of Optus' ground sponsorship. The team sponsorship continues. |

Maybe you're the one whose sentiments aren't aligned with our financial interests, SurreyBlue ![]() Carlton has been trying to secure a co-tenant for Princes Park. Now it looks as though Melbourne Storm are interested. But Telstra is a major sponsor of the NRL, and the Storm probably would not have been willing to be involved with Optus Oval. The return to Princes Park as the name of the ground allows us to secure more money. Only those who are ignorant or turning a blind eye would ignore this. The decision to move home games to Telstra Dome has been made already. The question of the financial sense of doing so is a multi-faceted one that is not limited to whether we can secure a naming sponsor over the ground, or lose the amounts paid by Optus for that privilege until this year. Optus remains one of our 2 major sponsors. For all we know, Optus will pay more in the future to be associated with a club that plays televised matches at TD and MCG than it did in aggregate when it had ground naming rights. Separately, there are those who regret the selling of our traditions for corporate dollars. For those who grew up calling our home ground Princes Park, the change to Optus Oval was one of these. We weren't oblivious to the financial benefits of this, but can you seriously suggest that traditional supporters who refused to call it by the new name would have devalued these naming rights? The move to Telstra Dome is another such example, and I don't believe that anyone who harbours disappointment at the move is ignorant either. The deal's been done, and the benefits realised. Carlton fans pining for their traditional home ground do not affect Carlton's revenue stream in any way. |
