I tend to think he's underrated.

Courageous, great runner, bit of a playmaker, seems to have great work ethic going by training reports and has very good delivery skills.

Can he cement a permenant role in the team beyond next year?

McGrath is an interesting one. His fortunes have gone the exact opposite of most of the 2003 other tradees - his 2004 was poor, characterised by many Bullants games where he just didn't seem interested, as distinct from his 2005 where he played 19 games, which is a great effort.

Compare that to Scotland, Teague, Johnson, Morrell etc. who arguably had worse 2005's.

McGrath was also tried ina number of positions, but was really needed in the back pocket, especially when Carrazzo was promoted to the midfield on occasion. So Mcg took some on-ball defensive roles, HBF and BP roles. I agree he's a real tryer and I like him much better as a defender as he is constantly challenged and threatened to perform.

For mine, I think as a tryer his time will be limited at Carlton, but not in 2006. I think we are still very light on for guys with natural pace and so McGrath will continue to get defensive games. Come 2007 and 2008 I'd be hoping for some young skilled midfielders to be learning their trade in the backline, which will see McGrath having to fight for his spot.

He has played 59 games now so I think he'll hit the 100, and maybe be with us for 3-4 more years.

I do like him, seems to always do his job, and is very accurate kick, i cant remember seeing him miss infront of goal.

Tries hard and leads by example but I reckon we are better of playing and developing a young kid. McGrath surely isn’t part of our future plans
He makes too many mistakes - his peripheral vision is terrible.

I think he's really worked on the slower deliveries and it's starting to pay off. He's lost a yard of pace over the pas few years but with over 500 wickets under his belt I think he's a really important player for Australia.

Nice summary molesy.
I know we say it a lot now but 2006 seems to be THE year for a lot of the blokes 22yo or older. A lot of us tend to think that a purge is on the cards at next seasons end to make way for plenty of 2006 draft talent. I'd love to see McGrath really kick on and cement a role.

Or we could:

1. Sling him in the long boat till he's sober,
2. Keep him there and make 'im bale 'er.
3. Pull out the plug and wet him all over,
4. Take 'im and shake 'im, try an' wake 'im.
5. Trice him up in a runnin' bowline.
6. Give 'im a taste of the bosun's rope-end.
7. Give 'im a dose of salt and water.
8. Stick on 'is back a mustard plaster.
9. Shave his belly with a rusty razor.
10. Send him up the crow's nest till he falls down,
11. Tie him to the taffrail when she's yardarm under,
12. Put him in the scuppers with a hose-pipe on him.
13. Soak 'im in oil till he sprouts flippers.
14. Put him in the guard room till he's sober.
15. Put him in bed with the captain's daughter*) (apologies to the Koutoufides family.
16. Take the Baby and call it Bo'sun.
17. Turn him over and drive him windward.
18. Put him in the scuffs until the horse bites on him.
19. Heave him by the leg and with a rung console him.
20. That's what we'll do with the cory mcgrath.

Mc Grath possibly saved his backside being kicked into Royal Parade with his 2nd half game on Buckley.Perhaps thats his role next year as a tagger.

Highly respected by his peers.his personal pre-game preparation would be second to no other player on the list.Accountable, hard at the footy, love the guy.

Agree DOA, he has transoformed himself form a flukey hff at Essendon* to a hard at it 1%er player under Denis .
He looks like a gladiator... i never would have thought anyone can transform himself the way that McTGrath has over the last couple of years.
Needs to work on his poise.. i think he would be great back on the HFF again.. but id like to see him become that back pocket player we have been craving for with the odd burst through the midfield.

Is great at clearances when given the chance.

Came to the club in that infamous & ongoing mass stocktake sale of mature age players we embarked upon. Scotland, Martyn, Harford, Johnson, Bannister, Morrell, Kenna, DeLuca, Mott, Bowyer etc all had varied success onfield but only three of them are still at the club. As a consequence, I believe that McGrath is going to be viewed in a somewhat tarnished light just like a number of those others and would be considered only as a back-up player.

I've only seen him play 3-4 games and he didn't do anything terribly wrong but he didn't do anything to make me sit up and go 'wow' either. We have now moved on to a solid youth policy and it for this reason alone that I believe his place on the playing list will come under heavy scrutiny at the end of the 2006 season.

It's not like he a gun matchwinner too, he's just your run-of-the-mill 181cm utility player who has to play at his best every game to ensure his career goes the distance. I'd lump him in with Livingston, Longmuir, Davies, Bannister, Prendergast, Sporn, Wiggins & Chambers as those who will be playing for their career in 2006. A shabby end of season report will see him (and any of those others listed) shown the door pretty quickly. The club is going to have to make room for 5-6 boom draftees next year and IMO, those places will more than likely be freed up from those guys including McGrath.

You need players like McGrath...
Its like dining.. its not always possible to dine in fine dine restaurants.
Sometimes you NEED to have your steak and eggs.

McGrath will most likely stay on that list...just because you can clear him out doesnt mean youll get a BOOM recruit.

I really dont know where you think youre just going to find 40 guns by the end of next year Sheik.

Making outlandish statements is all fine and good.. but you need to get logical too.

Some players are vital to a list and its not just about them being stars..

Our problem isnt the Wiggos and the Corys of this club....

Spot on Synbad.

Plenty of good-ordinary players with premiership medallions.

You can never have 22 stars.

What you need though is guys with the right application and attitude.

McGrath fits that bill well, hopefully he is around for a few years yet.

The only thing hindering McGrath is that he is not a "kid" in age. He has played far less than some many years younger than him, yet he will play out the 2006 season as a 27 year old, 6 months older than Whitnall.

Time is not on his side.

If he can put in a couple of good seasons he will perhaps stick around and be a mature age player in a better side.

I hope so.

Exactly.

If Carlton wants to aim at giving a flag a shake in 3-4 years time then if McGrath is still around, a 30-31 year old with plenty of experience could be invaluable, in say a similar role to Dean Rice. Not a star, but a gritty determined veteran you can rely upon.
