Post subject:  Thought for the week: McGrath; hard-man
Various posters on various forums have talked about your 'typical' aboriginal player, brilliant with skill, amazing goal sense, fantastic for a flanker or FP... Rarely you'll get an exception of the KP aboriginal, but our game has seen many of the former. Associated with this I guess is the feel that aboriginal players are much more likely to be outside players.

My thought for the week: Cory McGrath is the hardest aboriginal player that I have seen to play the game.

His attempts in the congestion were nothing short of desperate, nothing less than a desire to keep the ball in and stop the Eagles running away. I've read about how he wanted to draw level with Judd, well Cory, if you can do that, please try. Judd is amazing as many others have said. To draw level would be a 'sensational' effort.

But McGrath just wouldn't let up. It was great to see him get his goal, and well, lets look at Saturday night, he was in & under. Other aboriginal players, well, Sampi was kept well out of the game by Carrazzo. Does Sampi need an extra bow in his pocket? Is he anywhere near as keen on the ball as McGrath is?

For those who have watched him more than his time at Carlton, was he always like this? Are his brothers anything like this? Or has Pagan converted the boy?

mentioned in a training thread a couple of weeks ago just the weay he trains, he is always hard at it, in everything he does. It shows in his prep. It shows on the field. He is one seriously hard nut.

I felt that any time during our Wizard Cup campaign when McGrath was rotated out of the centre square our centre clearances suffered as a result.

He was really an underated lynchpin. I say was underated because he should be no longer. :wink:

As for toughest aboriginal player in the AFL - he certainly is if you include the word fair as well. :wink:

He does go in hard.

It's good also to have a left footer in the midfield to change things up.

McGrath does go at it hard and tackles very well and if you remember was in nowhere land when he started at the club and was out of favour....aboriginal boy from another club who plays it hard...I think Byron Pickett would be your man...unlike a few others I think Pickett takes his opportunities and does clean players up but most of the time its legal and its usually becuase he has caught players unawares.
Aboriginal player to watch this year.....try Anthony Corrie from Brisbane, being groomed to be the new Daryl White...

Glad you mentioned McGrath molsey. Tough, fast, skillful long kick, knows how to kick a goal, great tackler, able to do a tagging role, and can play fwd, mid or back. In a previous post, I actually tipped him as our plan B to tag Judd if Banno didn't get the job and he did alright on Sat. night.

Luv McGrath... is definitely in my best 18.

I like McGrath because he's a no-frills, hard at it player who really does look as though he's giving his all when he steps on the field.

Cory is one of our Hardest Players Full Stop.

His WC form has been great, smashing into guys offensively and defensively and kicking goals. Thanks Sheeds 8)

I danced on Sheedy's grave when we picked up Glenn Manton from them in 1995 and Sheedy went and recruited a hack like Tim Darcy in the PSD to replace him. :roll:

But the effective swap of McGrath/Bannister for Murphy/Allan is going to be something that I can use at Carlton -v- Scum games for the next 10 years. Priceless material - thanks Sheeds. :twisted:

Sheedy must be sorry he let go of Cory. :lol:

Anyway, Cory has been going well and certainly has timed his dashes inside 50 with perfection during the Wizzer Cup. Gee, it's great having a team knowing what each other is doing, and having the skills to finish of the good build up work.

I'm a McGrath fan.

It surprised me druing the off season when many TBVers didn't have him in their best 22.

He is a hard worker, hard tackler and one of the best kicks to a target in the side.

Some of his takeaways from the centre in the Wiz Cup were sensational.

I reckon rotating through the centre is a good idea for Cory.

Good player. Not quite as creative as Fraser Brown. But a beautiful kick, unlike Hogg and Hulme. Although I liked how hard Hulme and Franchina worked, it's good having defensive players who are athletic and nicely skilled (McGrath, Bannister, Sporn).
