Post subject:  Betts comes last in time trial

Was mentioned in The Age that Eddie Betts has come back from the break looking heavy and came last in the time trial... I know it is VERY early in our pre-season.. but a second year player should come back in great shape ready to prove what they can offer and develop now they have had a year of AFL footy behind them. I mean for gods sake... Whitnall beat him over the line?? Either a burger was on offer at the end of the run, or eddie has not started the 2006 season in the right way. Whilst he neeeded some bulk this year, his key is his speed, without that we may as well have Kenna back at the club... and we all know what happened to him (kicked the winner against the Vics this year of course....)

Hey dont worry about Eddie.Coming last in a distance race means that he is all speed and the fat will come off before March

i attended the Bombers one last year...
Andrew Lovett and the other aboriginal boys finished in the bottom few..
Rioli couldnt even finish a run around the park...
Doesnt take away from their footballing talents though does it?
Lovett had a super season..

MUST WE GO THROUGH THIS EVERY YEAR?!?!?!?!

Somebody has to finish last in these things - it doesn't necessarily mean they've turned into Football's version of Ricky May!

Brilliant!

I think we should form our final list based upon two things.

1) Age newspaper reports. (not the sun, we'll leave that for the Filth)

2) on their first training session (a run around a damn park).

Yep! We'll be back in no time.

Jesus. That means Calum Chambers should be captain, and Bannister Vice Captain.

Monsta,

Who did you want to come last?

Yes Mrs Cee............

it's just general mechanics............those little legs
can only cover a certain distance......!

a sprinter doesn't "do" distance...........and a distance
runner doesn't do "sprint".............!

kindest regards tommi

i'm just happy we've got some footy to talk about........!

the day the Carlton Football Club start paying my
mortgage and electricity bills..........i'll start freaking
out about every aspect of the club..........!

until then i just support..............!

always support.............!

Jesus people, don't jump down his throat. It was a legitimate question.

In the corresponding Herald Sun article, it claims that Betts really struggled over the last 500m and Cory McGrath jogged back to give him support.

I seem to remember Eddie claiming that he realises that one-trick forward pocket players were a dying breed - he said that one of his goals is to be able to play in the middle, iirc. A goal which has a lot to do with increasing his fitness levels.

It will be interesting to see his condition in the Wiz Cup, which is admittedly a while away.

I am a huge fan of Eddie and reckon he'll be a 200 gamer, but there are others on the list who should be running last in these things...not Eddie.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the HUN mentioned Eddie running last in a time-trial around the park, but then backed it up with the fact that he's more a sprinter than a stayer.

Context, people.

That's true.

I recall Fevola being the quickest player over the first 10 metres in his Draft Camp before we picked him up.

Isn't that what you'd look for in a leading forward?

Geez, no one else was as impressed with Cory McGrath's effort (to go back and help Eddie get across the line) as I was?

A team thats crying out for leadership, I thought that was good form from Cory...

Surely he'll have to improve his fitness to at least middle of the pack if he has any hope of playing midfield? He doesn't need to be right up the front or anything, but at least middle.

Good point.

Teamship. Cameraderie.

Good to see it blooming among the younger guys on the list.

Maybe Lance has improved, making the Betts look much worse!.....doubt it

Well done Corey, lets just hope it continues thoughout the 2006 campain.

Cmon Eddie we dont want you to be a younger version of Rioli (overrated underperforming hack)

I love Eddie BUT this effort was piss poor. Not the run itself but the condition he presented himself in.

Sure you might put on 3-4 kgs in 8 weeks off but sheesh he looked to have slapped on 10-15kgs

i hope Kouta and other senior players pull this guy up and let him know what it takes to make it and whats exceptable here. During the break I saw AB running laps around PP a couple of times and i could see the desire and determination in him to succeed. You just sometimes wish that more gifted players like Eddie would do the same.

And enough of this crap about him being a sprinter. Thats a cop out that wouldve been ok 30 years ago. This guy is a profession and for the smallest guy on the team to run last is a joke.

Newsflash Eddie, dont do it again.

Has anyone thought of the fact that Betts may be covering up for Whitnall? Surely Whitnall will not be found somewhere up in the front of the running pack, so Betts coming in last takes the limelight.
