Exactly how did the challenge rule work. Who had the right to challenge and were they only allowed to challenge for a GF?

I think the minor premiers had the right to challenge. Not sure of the exact rules, but it did cost us winning 4 in a row.

Basically there was a final four - with 2 Semi Finals - and the winners going into a Final - if the Minor Premier won the Final then it was considered a Grand Final Win to them and no further game was required. If they lost the Final they had the right to challenge and this was considered a Grand Final. The Minor Premier had the right to challenge even if they lost the Semi Final.

I don't think it is right to stick the boot into Collingwood - they have many things to be proud of.

Their record in the first 50 years of their existence was better than Carlton's, their win/loss record etc.

I just think that a bit of humility in victory goes a lot further than sticking the boot in to other teams. I agree that their record in grand finals isn't flash - but in some instances they got into grand finals when really they shouldn't have with the cattle they had - eg 1980/1981 etc.

Humility! We barrack for Carlton, arrogance is our birthright.
But you may have a point considering the kindness they showed us these past few years.

There was a year when Collingwood had a draw (as thehalford noted). In 1928 they drew their semi against Melbourne but won the replay and then the final over Richmond.

I was actually talking about 1977 GF. But that one works too.

Only one team has won 16 grand finals. Two have won 14.

I believe that Essendon* also has 16 flags to it's name. Hence why it was important for us to beat them in 1999 Preliminary Final; to prevent them catching up to us. But unfortunately, they won the 2000 flag and joined us at the top of the tree. :(

Two of the premierships Essendon* have they won via finishing top of the ladder, not from a grand final win as such. This is what Camel is referring to.

Not exaclty. In 2 years there was a Round Robin thing after the H+A season. Essendon* won in those 2 years.

I believe that both Collingwood and Essendon* supporters are nearly always the same, but that Essendon* supporters can somethimes read and sometimes have basic communication skills.

I didn't think the VFL/AFL ever had the system of who ends on top of the ladder wins the premiership. I think the VFA used to do that. And the season before the VFL began, the top two teams on the VFA ladder were tied, so to seperate them, a play off game occurred. The VFL saw how much interest it generated and decided to use a finals system from day one.
That's what I remember reading...or something like that. :)
