Hi

I am hoping Cazzesman might give an opinion on Trent Sporn as a player - the crows considered him but then decided against trading for him.

I know when Trent first came over he showed some nice skills and there was an expectation he would turn into some kind of player. Has had a bad run with injuries - but this year his body held together but he really struggled.

He has been in the system a while and I am curious as to
a) does he have the ability - that is what I am hoping Cazzesman can assess him on
b) why is he not performing as expect

Good average player, has played some good games, has played some average games, but i think 2006 will decide Sporn.

I must admit i dont feel confident when the ball is in his hands.

Never been a fan and I still maintain he was a poor selection....his one redeeming feature is his disposal..he just doesnt get the ball often enough to display it....lacks pace and is that awkward in between height and keeps getting injured.
I guess his best moments have been vs James Hird and I thought he did a good job in the wizard cup but fell away after that....had a few mates who did the same I guess...
I would delist him....

He's got the ability, but lacks the athleticism (or height) to play many positions at AFL level. I've thought for a while that if he was to make it, they would need to try and turn him into an in-close onballer, where his good hands and brain might work to his advantage, and his lack of pace wouldn't be found out so easily.

He had a shocker of a year. Everytime he got near the ball, which rarely happened he would just stuff up. Couldn't possibly play as bad next year so that's a plus.

Stefchook,

Could we turn him into a Daniel Cross type ballwinner? Or should we just allow him to settle on the half back line. His best game all year was his last one against Hawthorn.....he should be allowed to develop in one position instead of being moved all over the place

I wouldn't mind hearing Cazzesman's opinion, you are obviously in the mood for a good laugh as well.

It's certainly worth a try.

The problem with him playing in defence is that he gets led to the ball because of his glacial pace. Perhaps if we heavily flooded, or played in a team with a good defensive midfield, we could get away with playing him in defence. But even if we did, then Teague would have to go. There's absolutely no way you can play 2 guys with their sort of pace in defence in the modern AFL.

Lacks pace height kicking depth.I think the only way he will make it is to become a tagger.Has done some great jobs on Hird whor ates Sporn highly

I think it's fair to say that if Sporn's contract was up this year, he would have been shown the door immeadiately.

For someone who has been around since 2000, he really hasn't done a lot and doesn't command a position in the side. At least Livo has given us some hope of holding down the Full Back position.

I fear that if Walker, Simpson and Russell develop further in 2006, Sporn will fall by the way side and that'll be just about it for him.

I was going to make a comment but I was so emotionally wounded by CG's cutting words that I could nolonger bring myself to type................for a couple of minutes.

Sporn could be a good ordinary footballer if he could get fit and stay fit. Injuries have prevented him showing any real consistancy since being drafted. His leg speed is the biggest worry. He is alright when up and going but his first 5 metres from a standing start are a real worry. These days he looks too slow to play in the backline and when he plays onball as a tagger he doesn't get much of the ball himself.

If he doesn't get a full preseason under his belt leading into 2006 I can see him spending long periods in the VFL. I thought 2005 was make or break but surely 2006 has to be.

Cazzesman - thanks for your thoughts. Always appreciate your insights.

I conclude from those comments then, not to expect to much from Sporn and unless he can create a niche for himself as a tagger, he will struggle.
Here's hoping he has good preseason!

He is the type of player that needs a few leaders and stars around him.

He plays good football when the team as a whole plays good football. He will never be a matchwinner or gamebreaker, but could be a very good stopper in a settled team in the Tyson Stenglein, Matthew Carr mould.
