I just picked up the 2007 AFL Prospectus, which is basically 360 pages-worth of stats from the Champion Data guys. Here are a few observations courtesy of Champion Data which the stat-heads amongst us might interesting:

Bret Thornton ranked 4th in the competition last year for marks from opposition kicks. He also won the third-most groundball-gets in the AFL in 2006. And while he averaged 16.4 disposals last year, his efficiency rate of 92% was the best in the AFL in 2006 (for anyone with 50 or more disposals). Little wonder Hawthorn chased him so hard.

Kade Simpson's total kick metres for 2006 was 10,376 - 10th in the AFL. He also took 87 kick-ins and only missed the target once. And from Kade's kick-ins, we carried the ball inside 50 in an unbroken chain 43% of the time... ranked second in the AFL behind only Lindsay Gilbee (one of the AFL's best users of the ball).

Setanta o'Hailpin, during round 22 against Sydney, took seven marks from opposition kicks in total - a figure achieved by only seven AFL players in a game last season. Only guys who can read the play can get these sorts of numbers.

Team Stats: mostly pretty crappy, as you'd expect, but this surprised me: in 2006, Carlton ranked #1 for goals-from-kick ins. 9.8% of our kick-ins resulted directly in a goal. We were also 4th best at maintaining immediate possession from a kick-in (92.6%), and 7th best at getting it inside 50 (36.5%). This success seems largely due to Simpson and Scotland's excellent kicking-in.

Stats on our new guys (just some snapshots):

Gibbs
In his now famous 'standout' game in the SANFL, he had 33 disposals of which 88% were effective. 16 of those were contested possessions. He laid 8 tackles and kicked 6.1. In Division 1 at U18 level, he ranked No.1 for contested possessions, looseball-gets, rebound 50's and tackles. He ranked 2nd in clearances and third in disposals. His kicking efficiency as a junior was 78%, an elite ranking. In 16 senior games for Glenelg in 2006, he averaged 21 disposals and a goal per game.

Grigg
Of all the players taken in the 2006 Draft, he ranked 2nd behind Bryce Gibbs in average disposals (at 25.1 in 14 TAC matches). Grigg was also the only elite midfielder to average more than a goal a game. Ranked top 5 in handball receives and uncontested possessions, but also scored elite rankings for his contested possessions (av 11) and looseball gets (av 5). Grigg recorded the quickest time over 5metres at the draft camp. His only major deficiency is his kicking: at 66.8% efficiency and 3 clanger kicks per game (which was the highest of any 06 draftee).

Hampson
In 2006, averaged 14 hitouts per game at an elite-level 32% hitout-to-advantage ratio. At the championships, he was the dominant ruckman in Division 2 despite only getting an average of 47min gametime, because he was deemed the 'backup' to Renouf. But when on, he eclipsed Renouf's numbers: winning 67% of the 54 ruck duels he contested (the best figures of any player) and also had an elite 33% hitout-to-advantage rate. Struggled at ground-level, and with no more than 10 disposals in any game in 2006, has more work to do around the ground.

Benjamin
Below-average ballwinner, but he runs and carries like no-one else. At U18 champs he only averaged 11 disposals, but from his 21 kicks he gained an average of 40m for his side which was easily the best of any division 1 player. Kicking was wayward at U18 games but was far better at WAFL Colts, with an elite 84% efficiency rating. Bounces the ball heaps.

Anderson
At U18 carnival, he average 21 disposals, seven looseball gets and five rebound 50's in two games. From his 21 kicks he averaged a 42m gain, the best of anyone at the carnival, and still had an elite retention rate of 80%. 20m sprint is in the top 21% at the camp, also top 10% beep test. Interestingly, his kicking efficiency dropped off quite a bit in the second half of 2006 - before that he was averaging around 80%, but dropped to mid 60's from then. Maybe a niggle hampered his action...?

Austin
A very high percentage of his possessions are contested, so his efficiency rating is understandably low. Played 11 games in the SANFL reserves in 2006 where he averaged 11 disposals and 8 spoils a game. In round 17 of the reserves he had 17 disposals, 13 contested possessions, 4 marks from opposition kicks and 7 rebound 50's.

Thanks JM. Great reading and most unexpected in relation to T-Birds disposal. Last year I thought his kicking was dreadful.

What they don't tell you is that Thornton had just 36 long kicks (out of 226) so his efficiency should be high.

Great stats John M.

Key ones for me were:-

1) thornton - ranked 4th in AFL from opposition kicks.

I wonder who were the top 3?

2) gibbs ranked number 1 in contested possessions at under 18.

3) grigg - quickest time over 5 metres at draft camp.

many other impressive stats in that compilation.
Thanks John M.
