Post subject:  Luke Blackwell

Hey everyone, this is my first post.

Just interested to know from those that would have a fair idea, on how Lukey Blackwell is travelling at the minute.

I seem to remember our initial hesitation in drafting under F/S last year because he was considered very small and light onm and abit on the slow side. With players like Campo (bastard), Bowyer and Clarke already having made way will Luke fill the void in the midfield this year and has he bulked up enough to sufficiently compete at AFL level without being bowled over at every contest????

???????

Welcome to the site, Dooky!

First off all it is no secret that Blackers is light on in the weight department, but I have no doubt that as we speak he is cramming his body full of protein and pumping as much iron as he possibly can so he is full prepared for 2006.

While I believe we won't see Luke in the Navy Blue in 2006, I think we might see him in 2007. Make no mistake though, Luke is a smart operator and knows what he is doing. I can remember during pre season Synbad saying to me and a few others that Denis thinks Luke is a smart player and went as far as saying he'd outsmart seasoned players such as Nick Stevens. This was proven in a handball drill where the objective was to burn off your opponent and make sure the handball hit the small pole at either end to score a point.

Blackers took to this drill like a duck takes to water and killed it. Ducking, weaving, baulking and outsmarting everyone else, Luke, along with Eddie, owned everyone in the drill. It really was something to see.

So if Luke adds eough bulk to his frame, I have no doubt that we will be seeing him in the Navy Blue in 2007.

Pleased to make your aquaintence Dooks.First of all,the fact he is light on means eff all.He finds the footy with ease in heavy traffic. And that i like.Yep,too light, too small, too slow. You have heard it all and its true. But the fact that he gets it will overide all these deficiencies. But he is in competition with Bentick and Murphy in the hardball gets.

Not to be contrary but wasn't Blackwell being discussed as a potential debutant late this year by Pagan and co until he received a season ending injury? Given that I'd expect Blackwell to debut sometime next season, especially if he keeps up his good form.

Can't remember Denis ever saying that, but you might be right.

If he hadn't broken his jaw he was going to play in the last round

He'll play next year and he's smart to enough to overcome his lack of pace and size.

I think with another pre-season under the belt he should push to play a handful of games at least in 2006. If Bentick's form continues to be spasmodic then he might get a go at some stage.

I don't think he is that deficient in terms of pace. He's definitely no Judd (who is! ) but has more tow than someone like a Bowyer or Johnson. I reckon he looks very promising and is still a boy amongst men, and I mean literally. He looks like a 14 yo in the face!!

Pagan told a pre-training media conference at Optus Oval on Wednesday that Ryan Houlihan would be promoted after a stint with the Northern Bullants, and that midfielder Luke Blackwell, the club's father/son selection from the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, would have been in line to make his senior debut had he not sustained a broken jaw in the VFL last week.

As I have said before this kid will play seniors and regularly in 2006.Has put on weight during the year and has excellent vision in congested situations.Stood out in some ants games.would of played in last game had he not broken his jaw and the ants missed his play in the finals.

Well said keogh. Very clean which is a skill sorely lacking on our list. I think he'll gets lots of opportunities even without a significant size increease. If he can add some weight he's a monty for 10 games +.

Yes, this guy can hit a leading target from 40 metres - either side. It's enough to make you want to turn up next year to watch him alone.

If we are going anywhere in the future players like Blackwell have to make it as very good senior players and that means getting them into the fray sooner than later.I would expect Luke Blackwell to play senior footy next season..if he doesnt then there is something wrong..
Has the foot smarts, watched him a few time in the twos and he got caught with the ball a bit or rushed his disposal....WAFL footy is more open and he had more time to get rid of it....it wasnt leg speed that caught him out ..more awareness and that will come with experience..

ideally I would like to see Walker, Blackwell and Russell as our centre line..

Like his ability to win the ball and use it well in the VFL. Will look forward to seeing some games from him in 06.

He sure is classy. I was doubtfull about drafting him at first, because of his weight. He is starting to get real definition now. I also think he has real leadership qualities. The pick of last years draftees by a mile and that includes Russell at the MOMENT anyway............. He reminds me of Ratten a little.

Add possibly Murphy and Hurn to those three as followers and we'll be saying Campo who? in two years.
