THE AFL is trying to find football's greatest moment, and is calling on the public for help.
Cup teams and facts

In an initiative based on a similar concept run by Major League Baseball in the US, footy fans can this season have a voice in compiling a DVD highlighting the game's most memorable moments.

AFL statistician Col Hutchinson headed a committee that identified a short-list of 170 moments.

The list has been forwarded to the AFL Hall of Fame selection panel, which will narrow it down to a top 45.

From Round 3 the public will get a say on the short-list. Each week three moments will be put to the vote via the Sunday Herald Sun and Channel 9's Sunday Footy Show.

In Round 20, the top five memorable moments, as voted by the public, will be revealed.

The initiative is expected to generate fierce debate, with no shortage of contenders. Here's a few:

THE 1970 Grand Final, featuring Alex Jesaulenko's famous mark and Carlton's epic win after trailing Collingwood by 44 points at halftime.COLLINGWOOD'S drought-breaking 1990 premiership.

THE Hawthorn-Geelong 1989 Grand Final, featuring nine goals by Cat Gary Ablett.

DARREN Jarman's five last-quarter goals for Adelaide in the 1997 Grand Final.

BARRY Breen's wobbly point to give St Kilda its only flag in 1966.

DANIEL Wells' freakish goal at Subiaco last year.

HISTORY'S most exciting home-and-away Saturday afternoon – Round 22, 1987 – when Carlton snatched top spot on the ladder after the final siren, Hawthorn kept Geelong out of the finals with a three-point win, and Melbourne made its first finals series for 23 years.

TONY Lockett's point after the final siren in the 1996 preliminary final.

TED Whitten's teary farewell to football fans before the 1995 State-of-Origin match.

JOHN Coleman's 12 goals on debut in 1949.

I reckon we have a few more Carlton memorable moments!

Here are some of mine:

*'79 GF when Harmes skilfully knocks the ball to the goal square for Sheldon to Goal against the Pies.
*When Fevola kicked a bag against Filth in centeneray match (i'm hoping my memory serves me right on this one)

Maybe not up there with the others, but very satisfying was: When we beat the Bombers in round two of the season after we were hung and dried on Black Friday

Oh yeah, I agree on the 99 prelim.
Especially the moments when Brown tackled in the dying momnets of the game, when Kouta marked in the goalsquare in the middle of a pack, and when Big Red kicked a 50 metere plus goal

Definitely - I'd put that whole game as a memorable moment.

Kouta single-handedly destroying West Coast at Princes Park. (mmm - sensing a theme here :) )

Sticks kicking the goal after the siren to assure top spot in 1987.

Continuing on the Peter Dean theme - his speech after the 1987 win, paying tribute to Des English, Peter Motley and Bernie Evans.

Fred Stafford's goal in the last 30 seconds of the 1947 GF to win it by a point.

Some great moments at Optus Oval (Princes Park):

1978: Carlton vs Collingwood.
Just before half-time, with the filth in front, Magro flattens Jezza on the outer wing. Turns into a huge fight. The game swung after that with the highlight for me being Harmesy and Percy Jones hugging each other after Percy kicked the sealer!! The Heatley stand shook like never before.

1976: Carlton Vs North Melb.
Blight's kick after the siren to win the game. I was behind the goals with my heart in my mouth. When the ball first left the boot it swung out towards the social club, but then as the swing of the torpedo took over it cam back right through the middle!!! It was an unbelievable kick.

I reckon we should start a thread on "Talking Princes Park" as we count down to our last game there

- Helen D'Amico streaking in our GF 8)

- Bradley's running-banana-checkside-goal-tight against the boundary line-50m out-wrong side for a right footer-at Princes Park against WC. Probably the best goal I've ever seen live... IIRC he started from Full-Back, did the old 1-2 about 5 times, and had about 23 bounces along the wing before slotting it through :P It was the most excited I've ever seen Braddles after kicking a goal so goes to show even he knew how good it was... SPECIAL!!

Just look a little left of this post to my avatar.

Bosustow's mark in 1981 against Geelong at Princes Park - was the most memorable thing I have seen - I was right on the fence at the Heatley Stand end - and just saw Bosustow ride up on top of John Mossop's shoulders (who was 6' 5" in the old money) Mossop was also about 1 foot off the ground as well.

It was breathtaking and to be less than 10 metres away from it - I was in awe. 8)
