In his farewell speech Doc made a quip that he didn't think he would be finished at the club before ShaneO.

ShaneO has been with the club for so long that I reckon more than half of our supporters were probably born after he joined us.

I think I've got this right, but my first memory of ShaneO being involved was in recruiting Sticks, Bradley and Motley way back in 1986. But I reckon he might have had a few years at Carlton under the belt already even back then?!

I guess quite a few clubs have their long termers like him, but I'd love to hear some more about ShaneO who must be one of our longest ever serving employees and perhaps one of the longest serving employees in the game?

He was there with Parkin on the lap of honour in the 1982 GF. I think there is a photo of him chairing Parkin? Or was it 1981. I think it was 1982.

He left for a bit & went to Brisbane in its infancy I think, then returned to Carlton

Great call tap.
I recall him in the late 70’s.

I’ve been asking Shane for 20 years when is he bringing a book out. If he did a tell all it would an all time AFL best seller.

One of life’s gentlemen.

Bejeezus , you stole my thunder Cazz . Thought that many a time about a book by Shano . Of course its not gonna happen coz Shane don't spill the beans or talks out of school . A terrific bloke . The great thing about Shane is he has retained the common touch . Whether you are a high flyer or ordinary rank and file member Shane makes time for you . A lot of big headed know alls in the AFL industry and Shane is definitely not in that category . And his football knowledge is second to none ................. and I would like to add his brother Gary is still working for Casey Scorpions and like Shane is a wonderfull bloke .

1979 - 1982 @ Carlton

1983 - 1986 @ Footscray

1987 - 1992 @ Brisbane Bears

1994 - present @ Carlton

Hopefully Jarusa comes on and regales us with a few stories. Was lucky enough to sit next to ShaneO at a function last year and pick his brain about a few things that only he would know. He was kind enough to answer all stupid queries at length, and if there's no book - there must be a podcast.

And to add a bit of trivia in Shanes 1979 to 1982 stint Shane was the bloke to stand in between Percy Jones and Tony Jewell in that final out at Waverly Park when they were swinging wild blows at each other . How Shane never got belted to kingdom come I''ll never know coz unlike Percy Tony Jewell could go . Hilarious when you look back at it .

And as an added bit of trivia to that incident if you want to google it up you will notice Shane in his younger days was a dead ringer for Davey Jones of the Monkeys .

Sadly, I've only known ShaneO well for the last few years, wish it was a lot longer.

There is very good reason he won the very prestigious Jack Titus Award way back in 2015 (only 40 recipients to that point) and he has done PLENTY in the decade since.

I got to know him really well when he was made the conduit between the SOC and the club a few years back. It was an obvious decision, but still a great decision.

There is an obvious reason why he has been around the senior areas of several clubs for decades, just an exceptional person.

Lost count of the number of stories I have heard from him where internally I go 'holy shit', I have forgotten the majority as they are often in the middle of meetings where other stuff has to be thought about, only so much room in the caboose.

But just to give you a very simple example of the sort of bloke he is, every time I turn up to a meeting and ShaneO is already there he always asks if I want a coffee, nine times out of ten I say no, but when I say yes, off he trotts to the counter to order a coffee for me. He does this for everyone.

In terms of the past players he is obviously the best possible person. Past players are a BROAD CHURCH of people and personalities, really really broad. ShaneO deals with it all.

Old blokes calling in every couple of days to complain about this or that about how the club could be run better, people dealing with every ill you could ever imagine that only have the club to cling to, sorting out tickets for this that and the other, over the last year driving around disabled past player on a weekly basis here there and everywhere while new accomodation and a new prosthetic limb were organised. These examples just scratch the surface, you have no idea how much stuff a club does in the background for it's people.

I'm very cautious, but have asked ShaneO for on average one favour a year, usually a guest pass or something like that. Never a problem and you are basically told more is deserved or expected so it is always one of those strange experiences where you ask for favour and the person giving the favour does not make you feel guilty but that you deserve more favours.

In other words, top bloke, hope he sticks around for many more years, the club desperately needs people like ShaneO, there are very few left.

Thanks for that Jars, and the link too. Thanks Doc/CK as well for filling in some knowledge blanks about his tenures elsewhere.

(And not sure who I'm thinking of re the Sticks story, maybe I have that entirely muddled up?!)
