Is there a more useless thing than "expected score"?

I knew we'd cough up the lead but not that badly.

We were 26 points up with 10 minutes left, I honestly thought we were safe then. And 19 points up with less than 4 minutes, no one loses from that position in this day and age. And yet... it really would have been the most humiliating defeat in living memory.

Remember we lost to Adelaide letting them kick 3 in the last 5 mins or so.

It's very informative.

When we beat Brisbane by 1 point, I was cockahoot.
Tonight, we beat Dees by 1 point, I feel flat.
Go figure.

Cardiac Carlton strikes again!

Not sure who coined that phrase for us, but FFS, its soooooo true.

Who (wasnt) playing on Petracca? He almost won that game by himself!

Thank goodness for that great first quarter start, but I dunno, they seemed to go into cruise mode way too early.

The amount of fumbles infuriated me. Melb were far cleaner with the ball - especially in the last quarter.

I also think there appears to be something wrong with our "system" at key points in the game. I saw Vossy just sitting on the boundary with smoke coming out of everywhere in his body, but no actual action for most of the last quarter. Not sure what to make of that? Was he out of options to stem their flow? It was certainly a very worrying sign for me.

Weiters was the rock for decent parts of that game, but then inexplicably went missing. Clearly Goodwin changed something there.

I think I have said it 1 million times, but OMG ANOTHER soft tissue injury - this time to Cerra (AGAIN!). Seriously WTF is going on with our supposed superstar fitness coach or whatever his role his? FFS, surely enough is enough there. He simply has to be moved on and NOW!

I just don't know what to think about this game. I guess simply you take the 4 points, put down the resuscitator and run like the wind!

Next week the flying Swans at the SCG, where we just don't win. Don't hold your breath people. I am seriously stressed about that game already!

Watched the players walk from the ground, no one was upbeat, seemed glad just to get over the line.
Melbourne are a good team and were always going to rally, maybe we should of held off more, don't realy know.
A win that can define the season is better than a loss that could of shot our confidence.
Happy with the win and let's group together and move onto the task of beating the Swans in Sydney,
Now wouldn't that be great! Dare to dream. GO BLUES.

I'm still traumatised.
So close to a disastrous loss.
The frustrating thing is that I was expecting it to go down to the wire - even when it appeared we had an unassailable lead. Some really dumb and careless efforts in the last qtr.

Happy to take a bad win over a Goodwin.

Could have been worse and lost by 5 points but let's take the win, learn from it and move on.

Quick word to Ollie Hollands. You did a couple of nice things tonight you don't seem to have any awareness of who's around you when running with OR when you're about to kick the ball, You were caught so many times tonight, Need to improve here.

Glad that the when taking their set shots for goal in the last quarter the Melbourne players all took their 30 secs. That used up about 2 mins in total ..... enough for us to hang on.

Pros:

Pity we let it get close at the end, but a very mature performance.
Terrific forward efficiency again, even against an elite defence.
Great coaching effort. Loved that we moved Charlie further up the ground, and prevented May controlling the defence. Also did a good job to play through Lever's opponent. Liked the Kennedy match up on Petracca in midfield.
Weiters, Pittonet, Walsh, Cincotta, Owies.
Kennedy, Cottrell, Acres and Charlie were good.
Gee it makes such a difference when Martin is in our forward line.
Kemp's best defensive game.
McGovern got exposed defensively. But our defensive rebound looks much better when he's in the side.

Cons:

Conceded too many forward entries again.
Probably Oli's best game of the year. But he kept turning it over. A stronger body will make a difference. Also not overestimating his pace.
More injuries.

No, we were fantastic for 3 quarters and the first minute of the last when Hewett goaled.

THEN it went all downhill.

You just knew it was coming. We went defensive way too early. Gave Melbourne the impetus.

Has there ever been a player get caught HTB more in the history of the game than Ollie Hollands? Infuriating. Zero awareness. Probably had his best game of the year, but this takes the shine off it a bit.

We are a dumb team. We've always said it and we continue to prove it. And the other issue is that teams will always feel they're a chance no matter how far in front we get, because time and again we do this.

Positives are we played really well for 3 quarters. Had a plan and executed. I really like Charlies game tonight. Thought it was probably his best game for the year against a player that he genuinely struggles against. Pitto did a great job on Gawn. Owies keeps bobbing up with crucial goals. Loved Cincotta's game on Pickett. Beat him all night.

Cerra's hammy hurts. He is incredibly important to our midfield set up. No surprise they got on top when he went off. Is it the same one he did before? I haven't heard but if it is we wont see him for at least 6 weeks. 4 weeks if it's the other one.

Newman will get a week. Dumb.

I know the last quarter was a shit show but from this really tough run against top 8 teams we're 2 - 2 with 1 to go. 8 day break is handy and needed. Tough ask v Swans at the SCG but this team will have a crack. We've won against the odds before so I won't be writing them off

I just realised, as I sit here watching the replay, we only kicked one goal in the last quarter and 11 minutes of the game... funnily enough the exact moment Cerra went off the ground. Ugh
