Easy to forget we had them on toast in the first. If umps hadn't give them a foothold with some very cheap frees against Williams they might have been playing catchup all night even though they clearly outplayed us in the 2Q.3Q and 4Q were pretty close overall, Pies slightly better.

If they paid our forwards the Williams free’s, there would be an outburst from the whole AFL community.

Last week Cameron couldn’t miss. Tonight he can’t kick a goal.

They’re the kind of side to come out and lose to us next.

Their defensive structure is one of the best, if not the best. Their forward and midfield pressure and sticking tackles top notch.

I hate to say it, but I can’t see us winning this one. We aren’t anywhere near our best to match them it at the moment.

We really need to win this one. The toughest game of the 5 tough games in this series comes after, Sydney in Sydney, who are the best side going round presently.

May and Lever will be having wet dreams all week.

What’s the record for the most intercept marks in a game?

Yeah I really rate Melbourne too. Which is a bit strange because it feels like they've been struggling to settle on a forward line for years.

But the rest of their game, midfield toughness, defensive structure, absolute top notch. Just a bitch of a side to play against. And they'll be pissed with us too.

I think we will struggle to kick a winning score against this mob.
Hopefully the extra day's break makes a significant difference.
As mentioned by others we can't continue with Young and Fantasia.

its a game of inches ... so many minor things that can effect the outcome of a game ... never been more prevalent than the last few weeks ...

i look forward to the next challenge for this club, however i must admit, i go into this game thinking "what could be"

in the 5 week test, we are currently 1 and 2 (with a 13 point loss to the premiers 2 years ago, 6 point loss to last years premiers) and now we take on the team that won it 3 years ago ... that's some run.

despite all that, i just feel our lack of starting 25 is the difference.

Sadd, McGovern, Docherty
Fogarty, Motlop, Martin

instantly makes us a better side. 30% better IMO.

Too much talent out, IMO, is the difference between us winning and losing at the moment. Excuse, perhaps, but i also think injury management and "injury luck" are a reason for success and failure, when you get to this end of the competition. So many minor things need to fall into place for it to happen ...

Yes, every side has them, yes sides need to overcome them, but when the race is as tight as it looks this year ... every little thing counts.

injuries seem to be derailing us, while most of the teams (if not all?) that are around us on the ladder are mostly healthy.

i think structurally we're found a little wanting, and we're too easily countered without a solid back up plan... but that could be a personnel issue more than a coaching deficiency. we'll only ever find out in the rare event we have a healthy list to select from.

It's just really unfortunate we've copped our highest amount of injuries during our toughest run.

We do have GWS, Geelong and Collingwood again but not one after the other.

Our list is littered with talent and we went into this game with all our high profile players playing, except for a couple in our backline. Funny enough this wasn’t our issue.
Injuries shouldn’t stop us from setting up coreectly behind the ball.
Injuries shouldn’t stop us from applying pressure in the forward line.
Our midfield which was fully loaded got carved up after the 1st quarter.
That’s the game.

Another side we're very evenly matched with.

At this early stage I'd probably go with

Newman - Weitering - Marchbank
Cincotta - McGovern - Boyd
Acres - Cripps - Walsh
Cunningham - Curnow - E. Hollands
Owies - McKay - Martin
Pittonet - Cripps - Cerra

Hewett - Cottrell - Kennedy - DeKoning

sub: whoever plays well in the VFL this week.

Is Kennedy the 7th defender? I'd be tempted to keep Cowan and make E Hollands the sub, not sure what the latter's role will be with Msrtin back, and Martin may struggle to run out the game so having a like for like replacement may be b handy

Well, listed Cripps twice... so clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about...

At some point, belief has to take a hit. We've lost 3 of our last 4, albeit by small margins. It has to get into the psyche of the players. Hopefully, they can put it behind them and put up a good showing. Selection will be interesting. Surely, Young goes out. No match up this week to justify it. Fantasia offers nothing. Cannot stay in the side.

I must admit I don't understand the Williams hate. He's not the hardest player on the park, agreed, but this 2 kicks to Elliott in the first quarter were as soft as they come. Charlie and Cripps get assaulted week in week out and never get a kick. If the same was applied to them as was Williams on Elliott they'd have 15 free kicks each a game. We have very few high level kickers in the team. Williams is one of them.

I think this is one week you want the ruck combo. TDK forward will be important to try to keep the Dees backs occupied. May has embarrassed Charlie in recent matches. Time to step up to the plate.

McGov, Martin and Marchy available. Big call to bring them all back in, especially Martin and Marchy underdone.

Gov has enough of a base to come straight in. And Martin super important structurally given our small/ medium forward struggles.

I'd take them and give Marchbank a week in the 2s to find some form and fitness.

Out: Young, Fantasia, Cowan
In: McGovern, Martin, Kemp

We can if everything goes right. Surely we deserve a slice of luck. Go Blues
