Conspiracy theories about the AFL and umpiring (on other sites) hitting Marjorie Taylor Greene levels.
Not sure why mistakes can’t ever just be mistakes any more - they have to be deliberate evil.
Umpires must be getting increasingly fed up with the childish abuse. And I don’t blame them.
Personally grateful we have umpires at afl and local leagues … wonder how long before social outrage just turns people off starting on that journey and local clubs can’t get people to umpire anymore…
Well said Arny . A top notch post . I used to be involved in junior and local football going back a few years and it was hard even in those days to get umpires and its a damn site harder now coz of the shit they cop . Simpletons are killing the goose that laid the golden egg . Thankfully from what i am hearing there is a lot of work going on in that area in the local comps.
Good on you Arnhem Blues for raising a very good point . It is crucial to attract and retain umpires if this great game is to survive .
The shortage of umpires is highlighting their importance.
Here in local comps, umpire dissent and spectators has almost disappeared. It is frowned upon, and umpires give frees against coaches and spectators in lower leagues, and that has worked a miracle.
Our club lost 2 good U17 players to umpiring this year. Well I should rephrase that to our League has won the services of 2 players from our club who are keen to umpire under better conditions than they were familiar with in the past.
Some weeks, umps receive good money if they don't mind umpiring 3 games in a row at the same venue. They work hard for the money.
