Same year. At home, we were about 17 points in front of * with about 3 minutes to go
and lost by a point. Never got over it
We stood in front of the old press box. Siren goes, and we've been done. 3 ESS blokes behind
us start jumping up and down and bumped my mate. Not happy he turns around and nose to
nose with one of them says '' I've pissed on better men than you''. So then I'm thinking '' aw perfect
here we go''. But they scarpered, then we trudged back to the Rising Sun where we were to be picked up
by my mate's uncle. He was a no show, so we continued on to the Rochester Castle in Fitzroy
where amnesiac uncle was perched in the bar. He asked how did the footy go and do ya wanna beer.
Before my very irate mate could answer I said no thanks we're off.
Got back to my place where irate mate flopped in the half full bean bag, arse hits the floor and his head
jolts back hits the wall and cracks the plaster, pissing my then wife right off.
I can laugh about that day now, but not then.
At least we won the flag.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FEEL IF WE WIN AND YOURE NOT THERE....

This is what my now deceased younger brother hit me with on the eve of the 1993 grand final. I was in Merimbula on holidays with my first wife, who hated football, and two very little children. My brother called me on the Friday and said he had tickets and exhorted me to get there. I said no way, I'm in the middle of a family holiday that was booked months ago, just cant do it, I'm all set to watch it on TV, my wife will divorce me (ha!).

He said the line again slowly and deliberately to make sure I truly understood and added, "we might not win another flag for 30 years, you may never see another Carlton flag..." flower hell, powerful!

No commercial flights, damn. Ever industrious I talked my way on to a chartered flight that was leaving on Saturday morning, at exorbitant expense. Flew into Essendon** airport, off to the G, pumped. Carlton were favourites but the baby bombers had momentum after a big come from behind win against Adelaide in the prelim

Ten minutes into the first quarter we were gone. Dean Wallis knocked out Mil hanna and no one remonstrated. I felt sick. The rest of the game was a blur. To make matters worse I was staying with my brother and his girlfriend who lived in the heart of Essendon**. Went out to get pizza and beer wearing my Carlton T shirt and scarf and was heckled and ridiculed and laughed at honked by cheat supporters who were out celebrating in the streets.

Worst day at the football EVA. Flew back to Merimbula the next day hungover, depressed, and a couple of grand down (a lot in 1993) to face my wife who was seriously pissed off at what a selfish prick I'd been to interrupt a family holiday with her and the kids to do that. What a prick, she was right.

BUT WHAT IF WE'D WON AND I WASNT THERE.....

Absolute true story

PS. My second wife is much better. So is my first wifes second husband!

 Sorry Ricky gotta laugh...great story.

Was an absolute shock to lose the 93 GF. I left it all behind, went out, and had a great night clubbing for a few days and nights.

My Carlton supporting mate's 21st was the night of the '93 GF.

Navy blue balloons never looked so sad.

Well even if I was in Melbourne I wouldn’t go much
It’s a bugger to get around
Since living in Busselton which is 2 and a half hours from
Perth I have been to 3 games at Optus which is a great stadium
But really I prefer watching on TV
Old man syndrome
Plus weekends are golf or playing in the duo or band I’m in
Prices are cheap but costs for food and drink is absolutely ridiculous

My Blues housemate had his 21st on prelim night. I'd been to the game that day & was absolutely gutted Adelaide had lost.

I go pretty much every week with my Dad, who is now 80. We changed the type of seats we have a few years ago so he has to deal with fewer stairs. I'm also going to be in Adelaide for gather round this year. I usually miss a few games a year due to travel, usually in July / August.

My last game was the EF v Richmond. Went to every Carlton home game from 2003 to that day. Refused to go to away games as I wouldn’t contribute to the coffers of clubs that wanted us gone.

Haven’t been since and won’t go again.

Did you just know we'd be rubbish against Sydney the following week?

I wish I had, & saved myself the trip

If you'd left at 3/4 time we might have won

I’ve never really been one to leave a game early except for one early 2000s game (I think around 2004) under Pagan when we were about 80 points down against North at half time at the Docklands. Pretty sure we lost that by 120 in the end. The whole family stood up at half time and without saying a word we just walked out. Funny to look back on it now when we’re at least a competitive club but wasn’t so amusing back then.

On the thread topic, I still try to attend as many Melbourne games as possible. Live pretty close to town so don’t have any great excuses to not go. I probably got to close to 15 games last year given the finals run. Those two winning finals the best footy memories this century. Hopefully we’ve got a bit more to crow about over the next few years.

Leaving early….

I’m sure i did it at some stage…gave me an
opportunity to whinge with all the other
early departees….!

I remember about 17-18 years ago…i had taken
my nieces and nephew to a DFCB&RC#@%’S game…and we
were getting thrashed….!

these four Doomed supporters behind us were merciless…
giving to us big time…!

the kids wanted to leave…i said no we don’t do that…
it gives them more ammunition…!

so like a punch drunk boxer…i just kept getting
up…only to be smacked in the head with abuse…!

the game ended…i grabbed the kids…turned around
and glared…then said to the kids in earshot…”NOW…we can go”…!

we left…and i didn’t break eye contact with them
till we were behind them…!

it was most satisfying…and rather chilling….
they didn’t say a word…!

kindest regards tommi

I used to arrive late and take my little one to the final quarter for free entry (which they don't do any more for "safety reasons")

I used to get quite a few comments like "you're going the wrong way, mate".
