I put forward an argument against, in response to an abns post (IIRC) holding a similar view as yours Mickstar.
I may be wrong given Haynes and Gov are in their 30's, and the MC are willing to part with Young, and SOS hasn't been tried yet.
But I know we have yet to replace Jones and Young didn't come on as we thought he would. Its a gap this year.

I want SOS as a Fwd Ruck, but would be pleased if he could fill that CHB position.
If so, we have Young as cover for the 2 KP roles, and Haynes and Gov will compete for the intercept role.

If SOS doesn't succeed as a KPD, then we are short in defence and must go with Young or the much shorter Gov/Haynes options.
Is that enough cover for a KPD? or, do we need a ready made KPD to fill the gap, or at the very least, for cover?

If we have 2 SSP spots, then I would consider one open for the MSD, and hope for a Sam Collins clone breaks out in 2025.

If we go for a young Key defender to develop, then we have to throw everything we can at Sam DeKoning in next Trade period.
If we are a chance to win Sam's services, then a young key would make sense, and hope we have enough cover for height in the backline, if not, hope theres a beauty in the MSD.

I can't get Sam DeKoning out of my head.


Yes , SDK is a tantalising prospect for sure Bondi . And yeah , Young doesn't get the credit he deserves . Did well when the chips were down .

There's good reason I put his height in Cru.
You may not think height matters but it most times it does.
You may find one day, Haynes is fighting in the wrong weight division.
When I do my teams, I'm mindful of height when the opposition presents a forward line with a 3 headed monster. We couldnt handle the tall forward lines with Kemp and Gov taking the 2nd and 3rd Forward

The 2020 AA KPDs were Moore and Andrews, not Haynes. Yes he was played as a KPD for GWS when Taylor was out injured but the body of work was as a 3rd tall defender/ intercepting mark. I do not want to belittle Haynes, because he can play KPD better than Gov and Kemp. He's an upgrade, but he is at his best as a 3rd tall. SOS will be given ebery chance to make CHB his own. If that doesn't work, its probably Haynes.

Last 2 years I have heard how great Kemp and Gov are in defense, and how attacking they are with the ball...but finally the penny dropped. They were not big enough to win one on one against players their height or taller.

I'm a huge fan of Haynes. I know Diesel is too.
Diesel said Haynes is very good one on one ... when comparing Haynes to Gov and Kemp, Haynes the defender has great defensive IQ and leaves them for dead.

Just because Haynes was an AA HBF, and great 3rd tall intercept mark, I think there will be times he may struggle against the 200cm KPFs. That's all I'm saying.

He's 33 next year. I'd prefer he plays 3rd defender to leave his man (using his experience and god given talents) to help out team mates. Weiters is No 1, and number 2 is Jones (oops), Young, then SOS. O'Farrell is no where near ready.

No doubt Haynes will play KPD at times, and I'm sure we will all point out the mismatch in some instances.

Yes Cazz , I have mentioned this bloke . Strong as an Ox . In the words of Campbell Brown , " I have never seen anyone break a Dom Brew tackle , EVER . A martial arts expert , he has had a couple of cage fights . He is frarcking tough and fearless . I would get him to the Club as a tackling coach at the very least . Interesting Werribee had Bice and Johnson drafted tonight . Hopefully Brew and Jack Henderson get rookie gigs somewhere .

So a bit like signing an unsuccessful head coach who could turn out to be a fantastic assistant (several have gone down this path and become part of premiership winning teams), we've hired a guy who wasn't great as the main list boss but could be a vital 3IC behind Austin and Agresta?

If we are taking an SSP, we will do it by this Friday's deadline.

McMahon has been my preference all along, because of what I saw last year. He can play tall both ends.
He's the best fit to replace an injured Harry or Charlie...or Kemp in the forward line.

I expect SOS experiment back to succeed.

Admitedly, I dont know much about Philips and DGB is a no for me.

Interesting to note is our VFL listed ex Hawk, Philips, played on Harry during Saturday's sim, and held Harry to one goal. Impressive.
Gave himself every chance to get the nod.

The other impressing this preseason is our VFL listed Willie White.

Decision should be made, either way, before this Saturday's praccy game vs Aints.

He's a proven AFL player.
He will replace the injured Marchbank.
He played in 8 AFL games this year so not surprised he didn't make the VFL squad, did Marchbank?
I get the desire to pick up state level players like Geelong but maybe there is a reason Cooper has been overlooked for 8/9 drafts.
Cooper is an unproven risk (what we used to do) and we are at the doors of a premiership and would've been close to one this season if it wasn't for injuries.
So even if Haynes is 32, as long as he is not injured we have improved our chances next year already.


Anyone want a second opinion

I don’t think he will improve us at all but least he can play in the backline something we are short on I am more confused about adding Evan’s to our list a what 25 years old roughly been in the AFL for about 7 years and only played about 20 odd games to that is a good sign you’re not up to it just another dumb selection from Austin
