Things did not sound very good regarding Walsh tonight on Talking Footy. Just gut wrenching to think we lose another key player for a long period of 2024.

Of course I’m worried about Walsh but not as worried as this time last year.
I don’t think the club is playing funny buggers - there is no point if they know he’s done for a while, I reckon they’d just say ‘Out, 8 weeks’ or whatever. I just think that it is a difficult assessment that is based on milestones more so than time period. They’ve said they’ll reassess after round 2 so I expect we’ll get more of an update next week.
The Marchbank one strikes me as more bizarre. I wouldn’t have thought there are many illnesses that would put a player out indefinitely that can’t be named?

It is Marchbank we’re talking about. It’s probably a head cold, ie potentially terminal

I hear he is suffering long-covid...but according to some, it's just a "man flu"

Paraphrasing, but his progress in the next few weeks will be important as to whether or not he goes in for surgery.
Apparently he is not running well.

Imagine if we've lost 3 players for the season by April...

I prefer to imagine he pulls up well and we find out over the bye that he will be back in the next few weeks!

the exact wording was "he's running like an old man"

the exact wording was reporter Mitch Cleary said" "I was told by someone at Carlton last week "he's running like an old man" and next week is crunch time for him because when he bends for the ball, tackle, kick, that is still a big challenge for Sam Walsh. If he doesn't get through the next week or two, that is when surgery will be discussed around Sam walsh. So we hold our breath around one of the Blues great young players..."

Edit. Addition in yellow of what else was said by Mitch Cleary.

"Someone at Carlton" ... was that Lygon st. Doesn't say someone from the club who knows.

"Running like an old man"...was that a sarcastic comment, or 2nd hand news, or just bullshit?

"If he doesn't get through....." That's just opinion anyone can make on back injuries. Sensational headline at that too. You'd think he was a News Corp journo. May have tapped into someone's phone if that's the case

Have to wait and see till after the bye. In the meantime, I'm hoping for good news. Back problems are not good news. He has been jogging and kicking the ball.

Post subject:  Re: Injury thread 2024

The surgery he had on Dec 22 2022 involved the removal of a bulging disc portion to relieve pressure on a nerve.

Lets assume (make an ass out of you and me) he does need similar surgery again.

It took him 3 months to get back from last back surgery. He was ready to resume in April 1 to play GWS then North, but was eased back vs Adelaide game on Thursday April 13. He collected 30 plus possession to be easily our best on that awful night.

If he does go in for surgery, based on Mitch Cleary's claim it will be decided after the bye before North game March 29. Three months after that would be start of July ie round 16 vs Tigers.

We won without him last week vs a great midfield as we did last year in round 19 against Pies followed by the Saints, Dees and GCS .

We'll be right. He'll be back when we really need him.

In the meantime, we will have Hollands, Martin and Motlop back to add depth to midfield group.

Who knows, but Cincotta can come in and releases Williams to midfield group. Who knows, but Billy Wilson may break into the team this year. Unfortunately we have to wait for VFL season to start on Good Friday to see his progress. Who knows, but all this Walsh talk may be baseless.

Go Blues.

I guess part of the problem too is that long term issues for a back injury are more potentially life altering than a knee.

Agree with bondi. They've basically just quoted a supporter

It could have been anyone from the nervous nellies thread.

Mitch Cleary hasn’t done himself any favours, but if he hasn’t started to increase his training load, I would say that surgery is imminent.

Now, that could be:
- surgery right away with a view to return later in the year.
- surgery right away ending his season.
- surgery at the end of the season (i.e. maintain enough to take 9-10 weeks of jabs).

Either way, we’re at the global search stage & it all comes out of the soft cap - or Sam’s sky rocket.

Sam said he's not too far from returning in an interview with BT.

Haven't seen it myself as I was at the game.

All possibilities, but you can breathe easily given he trained with the rehab group yesterday. Sam Walsh was interviewed by Ch 7 and told them he's hoping to play in 2 weeks. Furthermore, Vossy said no surgery required.

Brad Lloyd said

Quote:
“He’s progressing really where we need him to. I know there’s been a bit of commentary in the last 24 hours, but he’s hitting all the markers he needs to, progressing well,” Lloyd told SEN’s Sportsday.

“We’ve said all the way through that we’d wait until the bye (Round 2). Because of the nature of the injury, we just don’t want to give that running commentary and have to make adjustments publicly every week.

“He’s tracking well. We’re happy with how he’s progressing and hitting all the markers he needs to.

“We’ll regroup over the bye and start setting some timelines for him, but for the Carlton supporters out there, we’re really comfortable with where it sits.”

Sam Walsh said

Quote:
“I had a training session with the boys in rehab (on Thursday), so felt half-productive about my day today, which was nice,” Walsh told 7AFL after the game.

“Hopefully (I’m back) within the next couple of weeks. It’s tracking well. These things you’ve got to build up.

“The boys are holding it down pretty nicely at the moment, which is good.”

Carltonians can relax.
