Exactly.

I couldn't help watch the draft last night getting more and more angry that the Suns didn't really have to give up much to get A grade talent and trade out a whole lot of meaningless 3rd and 4th round picks.

"Ok, so we'll give the Suns an A grade player and in return all you have to do is give back a whole range of 4th and 5th round picks that no one wants...eg pick 57, 59, 61 etc"

It's a rort. Yet another one. I am ok with the Suns getting these players but the point system is flawed. I don't feel the Suns had to give up anything of worth to get 3 A grade players.

It would be fairer if:-

Jed Walters was gained yet Suns have to give up at least one 1st Round or 2nd Round pick to gain him. So that might be a future 1st round or future 2nd round. This "point" system is a farce.

Agree with you on father-son too. A complete rort. Look at Collingwood and Nick Daicos. They didn't pay market value for him. They paid makey-up socialist mates rates for him. The ex-Richmond coach Hardwick doesn't need to be a genius to get towards premiership success with this lot. Didn't he say he gets a whole lot of Christmas gifts at the draft.. He knows, everyone knows in the industry the rort being perpetrated. My team has waited 25 years just to be competitive and their team gets given all those gifts. Not happy, Jan.

They paid what other clubs thought he was worth. That was pick 4 in a draft. Sounds fair to me.

Well I beg to differ if that is ok?

I think (and most recruiters would too) that Daicos should have been a number 1 pick...yet due to matey/matey cough cough deals behind the scenes he slips to pick 4.

These are the players that went before Daicos

Horne-Francis 24 games - 422 disposals
Sam Darcy
Finn Callaghan 21 games - 436 disposals

Daicos - 22 games 682 disposals.

Horne-Francis and the other two will be great players. Exceptional...but anyone who has seen Daicos live knows he is a pick 1. He is a much better player. It is all fun and games "let the system play out" until your team misses out on success cause Gold Coast or some other team didn't pay market rates. How have the last 25 years of watching Carlton been for you? A barrel of laughs?

But that's the whole point of father sons. You get the player for a bit unders, because of the bloodlines. Which is available to all clubs except GWS & GC.

Personally I'd have him at two or three. I couldn't care less that Collingwood used the system to their benefit. Carlton had chosen not to take part in the first round to gain Adam Cerra.

In all seriousness - a few laughs...more barrels. I can't see us winning a flag anytime soon. We're approaching a 30 year drought and I think that'll stretch to into the 40s. I'm no longer a member, have no intention of becoming one again - but with last night's haul of draft picks I'm seriously considering that Gold Coast membership again.

Sorry, but I'm not a fan of anyone paying "a bit unders" based on my experience of watching the last 25 years of watching football.

Can you remember the game in 2003 when the Kangaroos kicked 28 goals?

The score was 187 to the Kangaroos.

Carlton kicked only 9 goals.....

How were the 2015? 2016? 2017? seasons for you? 2018? etc

The "bit unders" IE the points discount was intended to encourage clubs to take f/s kids where it may have been a marginal choice. Obviously that makes no sense if the kid is rated in the first 2-3 rounds because they are going to take them anyway (unless they don't like them or don't need their type).
So having no or little or even a premium for the early rounds is justified, but should not start until after next year:)

What about if we are the beneficiaries of the system, with Campo, & maybe Andy Walker's kid in a few years. Would that change your view.

Not sure of the relevance of that game against North in 2003, unless they had a bunch of father sons running around for them that day?

Thats it " CK ". The father/son rule is one of the great tradition's of our game and may it stay forever . So many traditions have gone by the wayside for faaark sake . Enough is enough , leave it alone . Besides , after a lean stretch we appear to have some beauties coming through the ranks . Swings and roundabouts .

It’s a flawed system. Right idea, poor execution.

GWS figured out pretty early that a team full of boys won’t get you into September. Gold Coast keep topping up, paying them too much too soon, then losing them. That’s the ‘natural’ market forces at work.

The most glaring flaws in the system, for mine, are:

1. The points index is fixed. Same value every year.

2. The number of picks in the draft is determined by the number of available spots across the league. We entered the draft with three picks because we have three spots. Gold Coast started with six picks, because they have six spots (how the extra list spots they have for being pathetic come into play here, I don’t know). As soon as the draft started, they increased their number of picks to 10. If they were forced to operate within the list parameters, they would have to retain an earlier pick to make up the points balance.

Zane Zakostelsky is the next best imo. Will need a little bit of time, but looks the goods.

Everyone has different views of the game..15 years ago my opinion would have been very similar to yours.
“The romance of the game”.. so that when the new Tasmanian team comes in .. the Tasmanian Turtle Todgers.. many will view it as “romantic” and “good for the game”.
I am way past viewing what is good “for the game” .. sorry.

I would be happy with Zakostelsky as a developing KPD. We need to regenerate our depth there in the long-term.

But the player I want the most is Cooper Simpson. He looks like the pacey goalkicking mid we so sorely lack. He has a solid build and the right attitude to debut next year. And at the very least it keeps the pressure on martin, e.hollands, cunners etc. to really step up. Someone needs to elevate themselves in this part of the ground if we're going to see 17.

Clearly loves a goal in these highlights

Nice pick that Cooper Simpson. Beautifully weighted kicking style. I love that he can take them on, burst, bounce and then steady to pinpoint a pass.

Very impressive.

Thanks.
