What a good weekend of footy.
Pies, lost.
Scum, Flogged.
Geelong out of the finals.
And we win a game we should've probably lost and would have in previous years.

Gold Coast are similar to us at the start of the season in the sense they have the talent, but just can't grind it out for 4 quarters.
It'll all change next year with Dimma there.
1 thing was apparent in the game for me and that was our lack of speed, especially in the first quarter.
I hope we add a quick mid or two this year.

All hail King Charlie!!
Rd 23 Gold Coast v Carlton, 3 votes - Charlie Curnow.

After watching replay again there were a few that had howlers of games
Probably the worst game I have seen from TDK
Not sure if it was Cincotta / Fisher /Kemp marking Swallow but they need to take a good look at themselves
We allowed Flanders off the hook
Thought their midfield were far better
Harry was disappointing
Cunners struggled
Cripps way down
Thought Doc was a bit off as well

thank God for Charlie Weiters and Newman
Motlop stepped up once again after being quiet last week

Adding to that.
Hollands and Cottrell to a degree were owned again on the wing for the second week running, poor output from both.
Ed was a bust as sub.
Cincotta got exposed a bit.

I thought Dow had a really good game and it was great to watch him gain some form leading up to the finals.

Watched the first quarter on 2x speed on Kayo, just needed Benny Hill music.

Cottrell was huge for us.

Cottrell was huge for us.

I think 'huge' is a bit of an over exaggeration, Charlie was huge.
He kicked a good goal and done a couple of good defensive things but 11 disposals, 0 goal assists, 2 tackles, 2 marks and only 169m gained for 93% game time is not 'huge' IMO.
Each to their own I guess.

Watched the mini match and agreed the sun/shade effect is a shocker, I'm not going to bother with the replay, it's unwatchable.

It was tough watching it at the ground.
Not sure why the AFL schedules day time games up there.

Yep when we sat in our seats and copped the baking sun, I thought we were in trouble.

The first quarter ratified my fears - somehow we pulled it out of the fire after that. Amazing character to come away with the win.

We've used our get out of jail card, and given the conditions I will excuse the team for being flat at the start, but we can't be doing that in finals.

I was standing on the opposite end to where Charlie did most of his magic up forward, watching the Kayo Mini last night - wow, that was peak Kouta-esque. We are truly blessed to have him.

Also Nic Newman again was amazing. Don't care if he makes the AA team or not but he is surely a smokey.

We sat in the sun too and thought the same thing.
Sounds like you were at the same end as me near the GC cheer squad.
We got a great view of Charlie's mark in the dying seconds.
I watched the replay and that was a great effort to come back the way we did on more than one occasion.

Were you one of the ten fans I bear hugged when he took the mark?

Charlie has 114 votes in the MVP meaning some nuffy didn't give him 5. Whoever that was, hang your head in shame and do a lap.

He single handedly brought us back from the dead TWICE and then went back took the match winning Leo Barry mark.

He was on a different planet.

It was me and I voted for Weiters. Next time I vote, I will seek your approval.

That would be wise

I thought Cottrell was pretty bloody good, particularly in the first quarter and a half when everyone else was still asleep. That effort on the wing to out run 2 suns players and screw it around the corner to Charlie at full speed which led to a goal to Owies was sensational.

Don't think it was me. Lots of high 5's around me though.

Charlie is GOD

Compared to your description of his game as "owned", "huge" is apt. You are way off the mark this week

A couple good defensive things? Surprised you even noticed him TBH.

Do you just look at the numbers/stats after the game and make your call based on that?

Its a team game. Players play roles. Its not the numbers that count for everything, and sometimes for nothing. What about the 16.5 kms he ran: match high.

Cincotta had Rosa
Newman had Swallow
Saad had Sexton
Fisher was the loose man filling holes to disable players like Swallow running hard towards goals
Weiters had Csboult
Kemp had Lucoscious
Marchbank had Chol

Hard to know who was minding who in a team defense system, but most of the time it was the above.

I think your man is Newman. What have you got to say to him?

I thought Cincotta sat on his man and won the battle after Rosas first goal of the match.

Yeah, each to their own.

Someone said Ed was a bust - possibly correct, but I think he was tasked with tagging Miller in the last, which didn't work at first (goal to a running Touk) but might have paid off overall.

I'll have to watch the game a third time (and leave out the first and third quarters this time)
