But the point abns is making (I think) is that the Pies got themselves in a position to win the game. We gave them that opporttunity by allowing them to have shots at goal, last year, they would have kicked, and snatched the game.

Yep. There are two problems IMO - (1) we didn’t capitalise enough when we had the run of the play - particularly in the 3rd quarter - so Collingwood were still in reach when they shouldn’t have been; and (2) we weren’t convincing at all in closing the game down in the last term - it was luck (Collingwood missing easy shots) rather than an improvement in handling that scenario which allowed us to win.

I can almost guarantee that if we don’t capitalise when we have our chances against Richmond in 18 day’s time that they will run over the top of us because they will think (know?) we’re mentally suspect in that situation and multiple goals can be kicked quickly against our defence.

I hesitate to read too much into it. Practice matches are weird.

Nice to see the 2 new wingers have an effect, plus no injuries.

I agree

Assistant Coach, Ash Hansen made the point after the game that getting the ball high and quick into forward 50 to take advantage of our weapons is deliberate and the plan.

I'm sure there are better ways to go forward most of the time we bomb it.

There are times when Harry TDK or Charlie are one on one and a good chance to mark, AND, hopefully have Durdin or Motlop running forward to the fall of the ball, if not marked.

I loved it when Cripps miraculously pulled the ball out of a pack handballing to Motlop who kicked the ball 10 metres for a mark to Honey. He's a good kick at goal and he did goal. The accidental miskick across toe ground by SOS to Hollands just after half time was the ticket, but SOS was going for a wild shot close to the boundary.

We waste too many forward opportunities imo. Its why we missed finals and lost the game in the dying minutes in round 23.

Admittedly the forward line would've looked a bit better if Charlie had actually tried

Please CK , a highly strung thoroughbred save themselves for Flemington , not a picnic outing at Stoneycreek .

Yep, I agree.
You're not lucky to win when you've had more shots. They're fortunate we didn't put them away earlier.

That was a quite bizarre game. Some players like Weitering and Curnow in fifth gear and probably the heat also having an impact. And the telecast vision was poor. Oh and how was the pro Coll commentary? Like WTF?

Weitering is probably still learning to cope with running with an extra 10kg in muscle by the look of him!

That’s exactly the issue. We should have been 5-6 goals up at 3/4 time. When we don’t capitalise on our control of a game, we leave the door open for the opposition and get the jitters. When the momentum inevitably swings the other way, sides know they can score quickly against us. The only reason Collingwood didn’t run over us in the final quarter was because they missed a few sitters. In that sense, we were lucky that we didn’t blow it.

Yes but Collingwood was also v lucky a few times last year around mid season which gave them belief and confidence which then kickstarted their run of close wins. Yes they were practising the last 2 minutes a lot but they were also lucky.

Point is we should not leave anything to luck.

Forwards must kick set shot goals. Simples.

I think we can all agree it’s nice to be unhappy with a win, almost like the good old days….

Our goal kicking definitely needs to improve. I also think we need to find a way to get more shots from closer to goal and within 45 degrees which should also help with our accuracy.
Btw, I think we were doing that in the early part of last season in conjunction with the one extra handball forward to clear the contest and fast movement to the forward on a short sharp lead 20-30m out.
But then teams worked out how to hold us up a bit and we went back to either bomb and hope, or kick to a wide lead 40-50m out on the boundary.

Pommie In Oz review of praccy game.

Really good insight in new game plan tactics.
