Durdin and Owies will be plenty motivated in '24 after the way' 23 panned out, for differing reasons

Rhys Mathieson has been delisted ... would Carlton have any interest in him?
Also, any interest in Toby McLean?

What’s your take on the Hollands trade Surrey?

I'll play one last time, but only because you asked nicely. Not that I don't believe you aren't fishing.

I haven't seen enough of the kid to be totally convinced either way.
As a previous high draft pick (is that ok to say  ) and from the limit viewing he looks classy and talented.
My concern is that he hasn't been able to break into the GC team and I would like to know the reason(s) behind that. Does he work hard enough? Does he have an attitude issue?
So for the pick we paid - I'm obviously ok with, but as a top 10 pick, I would have expected GC to ask for more.
I'm a little cautious currently due to price paid and 3 years of limited output. That's my 2 cents.

Do they need more picks?

They have an AFL sanctioned rort that will hand them a Charlie Curnow, a Kreuzer, a Zorko/Neale small mid and an inside midfielder like Dow.

This is the club that traded pick two for Weller, traded Wright for peanuts, lost Jack Martin for nothing and gave the Cats the Clark pick so they would take Bowes. The AFL are propping them up like North.

After three seasons, Hollands is only eight games behind Dow's games tally who wasn't recovering from a knee reconstruction in his first season. Dow didn't move interstate during COVID and land at the Suns who arguably lacked more senior talent than Carlton. Dow wouldn't have played his heart out like Rowell or Walsh if he was at the Suns.

Aside from the handful of blokes that are a little bit of this & a little bit of that, our current list looks like:

[3] Key Defenders: Weitering, Young, S. Durdin
[4] Med Defenders: Marchbank, Kemp, McGovern, Akuei
[6] Small Defenders: Saad, Williams, Newman, Boyd, Cowan, Cincotta
[4] Ruck: Pittonet, De Koning, O’Keeffe, Mirkov
[3] Inside Mid: Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett
[4] Midfield: Walsh, Cerra, Docherty, Carroll
[4] Wing: Acres, O. Hollands, Cottrell, Binns
[3] Mid Forwards: E. Hollands, Cuningham, Fogarty
[1] Med Forwards: Martin
[3] Small Forwards: Motlop, Durdin, Owies
[4] Key Forwards: Curnow, McKay, Silvagni, Lemmey

[2] IRISH: Monahan, Duffy

The Irish are a bit of a mystery, but even if they come in as medium forwards, that’ll be at least one of our draft picks in November. We’ve heard Vossy on more than one occasion state that there’s only one Jack Martin. As much as it is high praise for the player, it’s also the cold hard fact of the list profile.

Eight specialist forwards… eleven if you include the mid forwards. It’s difficult to looks at them as a group and be convinced that they can deliver a dozen goals a game without Charlie. Not that you’d plan for the worst, but there’s no denying the massive hole in expected output between our best and second best lineup.

The other vulnerability in our list profile is the age (and durability) of our small/medium defensive group. The Camporeale boys will come in for 2025 & both will probably begin their journey across half back. However, we might find ourselves crying out for an intercept if the usual pair miss games in bulk again.

That being the case, I’d guess that the picking slip reads something like:

1x Medium forward
1x Medium defender
1x Two-way mid (because there’s never enough of them on hand)

Great breakdown.

The forward line really stands out as the area for improvement. Outside of KPFs, we have solid roleplayers in there but only a couple of guns.

Hopefully E.Hollands is a genuine forward and not a homeless midfielder. Half forward is arguably the hardest position to play and can be a graveyard for guys not born to play there.

I also worry about our midfield. We are largely all-in on this group, which is concerning given we were beaten so badly there in the prelim. Kennedy could be upgraded for a pacier midfielder, but where are we going to find someone like that? We just let go of that type of player.

A ruck upgrade could certainly help but would cost too much in salary/draft capital so I think we'll stick with what we have.

Overall our list is in great shape with a solid foundation, so I'd like to see us take the 2 x high-risk-highest-reward forwards available.

My take on new Hollands is that he’s the closest thing we’ve seen to a De Goey type for at least a decade - maybe since we built the prototype in the #43 jumper. Obviously need to temper expectations (games aren’t won on paper), but a true half forward stoppage winner is going to be unreal for our scoring effort.

Considering we had the ball more than most, our tackle count and pressure numbers were pretty good. But you’re spot on with the midfield pace issue. Kennedy himself might be an upgrade next season. It might be a bit ‘no-shit-Sherlock’, but I don’t think he was 100% this year, even before he injured his knee.

Speed from inside to out is what we lack most. Defending that spread will decide our fate next season.

AFL comment on our list and their view on our best team for 2024.

Carlton has some serious depth now, evidenced by the fact new recruit Elijah Hollands might struggle to crack its best team. Brodie Kemp will vie with Caleb Marchbank and Lewis Young as the second key defender, while the long-awaited return of Zac Williams could force Jordan Boyd to battle with Alex Cincotta for the other spot across half-back. Jesse Motlop, Lachie Fogarty and Matt Owies are given the nod as small forwards, but Corey Durdin and David Cuningham can feel stiff. The flexibility of Matt Kennedy and Jack Silvagni make them appealing options to eventually see plenty of footy, while the workrate of Ollie Hollands could see him force his way into the side. There are high hopes for youngsters Lachie Cowan and Jaxon Binns, but they're not part of the senior setup regularly just yet. – Riley Beveridge

B: Mitch McGovern, Jacob Weitering, Nic Newman
HB: Zac Williams, Brodie Kemp, Adam Saad
C: Blake Acres, Adam Cerra, Sam Docherty
HF: Jack Martin, Harry McKay, Matt Cottrell
F: Jesse Motlop, Charlie Curnow, Lachie Fogarty
Foll: Tom De Koning, Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh
I/C: Marc Pittonet, George Hewett, Jordan Boyd, Matt Owies

Emerg: Matt Kennedy, Ollie Hollands, Caleb Marchbank, Elijah Hollands

I find it interesting there is no 3rd tall to take the heat off Charlie and Harry particularly Charley. JSOS should be in if only on the bench.

Both Hollands bothers could only make it as far as emergencies.

Hmmm.

Has played 4 games in two years, with a career average of 9 games per season.

That’s David Cunningham like durability…
:yikes:

Will miss the start of pre-season as he recovers from a severe paper cut whilst signing his contract.

I like it.

Will be cheap, we have spots on the list, he has experience and the upside if we get his body right is high. He can kick goals, and provides competition amongst the smalls.

Moderate to low risk, high potential reward.

We need to think outside the box as we don't have the cap space and draft capital in this very moment to land bigger fish.

Couldn't have put it better myself Trav . Small medium forward position is the glaring weakness in our side . Orazio averages a goal and a half a game . Our time is now and our list management team aint hangin " around wishin " and hope " for a young one to come on . If Durds and Motts want it they are gonna have to fight tooth and nail to earn it ...................... signing Orazio shows just how switched on Curly Jnr and Lloyd are .
