This is absolutely the right thing to do with the NRL starting early. Won't affect Carlton and/or Richmond one bit.

That's all right.

Not letting the AFL manipulate behind closed doors make a public announcement that the AFL being equitable in all things will surely now share the ANZAC
and Dream Time matches around. We volunteer to be one of the clubs involved.

I'm hearing that the round 1 game against Richmond will not be moving forward. This year the AFL are suggesting GC v Richmond for R1. Not going to say it but ...........

I am sick to @#$%&! death of playing Richmond first up.

FFS.

I was over it after the 3rd one.

We learn absolutely nothing about where we're at regardless of the result every single year.

Whoever decided to make that a thing deserves to live the rest of their life as a eunuch.

I think all major events should be shared around, including Anzac Day, Queens Bday....

IMO, Game One should always be a replay of the previous year's Grand Finalists.

Both clubs. It's one of the first things they request. It makes money for the club. If you don't like it - don't watch it!

Tough crowd.

Anyhow, with the RL starting their season in las Vegas it's probably a deliciously cunning plan to start the afl season in Sydney

Game one should be the two losing Prelim teams.
ANZAC Day should be the previous year's grand finalists.

For no reason other than I decided just now.

You might like to raise with the CEO at an AGM, but I'm going to guess the conversation might look something like this:

GOPP: "I'd like to have a different opponent for Round one. We always play Richmond - and...well...it's becoming a bit boring"

Brian Cook: "Both clubs work extremely hard with the AFL to ensure this game is a major event on the sporting calendar and it has proven itself to be a success with crowds averaging over 80,000"

GOPP: "But I'm bored"

Brian Cook: "Sorry to hear that. We are confident that the brand of football we displayed through the second half of 2023 is very exciting and we expect that to be the case throughout 2024 no matter who the opponent is"

GOPP: "But we learn absolutely nothing about where we're at regardless of the result!"

Brad Lloyd: "I can assure you that's not the case"

Brian Cook: "We are a big club and we'd like to stay that way. To open the season at the MCG is enough of an event that is necessitates playing another big club and a respected rival. From a commercial perspective, Carlton is due to be the home team in 2024. A crowd of 80,000 equates to a profit of around $600,000* (if we only play them once) and Richmond will receive a fixed fee to recognise their part in promotion and marketing. From a TV perspective, this game reached 2.14 million viewers nationally last season. We like having Richmond as the season opener. Given that our other main rivals are locked into their own blockbusters, it would have to be something pretty special to replace what we have - and that's looking at it purely from a bottom line perspective."

NRL Vegas showcase is March 2 & 3, so probably still competing against the NRL, but it is a great idea. One thing to watch for...if Pies go to Sydney first up AND do the back-to-back Queensland trip then they will likely get some fixture relief at the back end of the season.

Where Collingwood is right now is akin to where India is with world cricket.

I wouldn't mind if the AFL did something more creative with the opening game than just us & Richmond each year. Even though we benefit from the current setup.
