Maybe we should just ditch the player sponsorships and use that?

Save the site and two young careers with one action.

We haven't sponsored LOB since 2020, and KP (as she now is) is an All-Aust defender, so that's not too bad… but I haven't updated the banner.

Further, TC hasn't tipped in any cash to the sponsorships for at least two years, that money has come from individuals.

Like chucky says… we need new admins for TC, as well as a better hosting option.

I've got space available.

Do not want to see anything lost.

Can host for free again since the site is low traffic now.

If you think this is an option flick an email my way, jarusa@iinet.net.au

I was hoping the TC footprint was pretty small.

My number one priority is the Blueseum and protecting it from potential harm.

After making the offer some of the statistics I have seen make me worried about what might happen 4 or 5 years down the track.

If a solution is possible with Blueseum being safe will go for it. But otherwise will be happy to contribute financially to another solution.

I'm sorry but I refuse to remove the traffic I get from dirty foot f**kers dot com /joke

Just starting a new group on Discord. I didn't create it but helping design the structure of the threads, tools, bots etc.

Definitely the way to go for TC IMHO. not sure on costs. low I think, this is a study group in a masters stream.

Has dedicated apps for mobiles and desktops — so no advertising bs (and I can use the bull and pooh emojis in it unlike here) going to others or getting your website phished the way I just logged into TC via a third party wrapper website without noticing. I'm sure they would have been running ad revenue and scraping data/passwords as it was unsecured site.

http://websites.milonic.com/talkingcarlton.com

Anyhow I'll ask how much Discord was to set up a server. You can set up custom emojis and stockers that are Blues themed just for your own server.. Like a shrine and a magnet and a diesel train for example. :-)

the problem with starting elsewhere is the nearly 20 years of history would be lost.

Discord is a very different experience to forums.

There should be a commitment to move the top 20 all time threads over to whatever new forum.

I'm not sure I can do without the first 19 Warrens and the Cripps thread.

There is a lot of early stuff that I’d like Demitispew’s defamation legal team never to be able to see and lucky Ron Evans has passed on.

We shouldnt lose a thing - if it remains a forum

Its a database conversion and reinstall to new home.

If you are looking for a crossover of forum > discord > back to forum - I feel tapatalk does it best.

There are one way mods available, but nothing in a quick search shows a both ways version

Eg here

Happy to contribute, been a great place over the years without all the silly restrictions you get elsewhere.

Would be a shame to lose all the old stuff.

Hi Guys,

First post in nearly 18 months! I need to discuss a few things.

1. Google Ads is simply not generating the money required to pay the server fees. Right now we are down to $50 and we pay about $85 a month in hosting.
We need to move to a cheaper web host. I have no idea what impact that may have on performance.

I'm happy to cover any shortfall until November but after this point we'd need to consider how its going to be funded on an ongoing basis.

2. This site is running on really old software, I've looked at it a few times and it's going to need substantial time and effort to roll all the changes through and I have no idea how it may impact the MVP. I'm starting to think the best option is to archive this board at the end of the season and start a new instance of TC with the latest version of phpBB.

3. We need to find a new Admin. I just don't have the time or inclination to do the role any more. When I helped Camel start this site, I was still a software developer - I haven't been in that role in 12+ years, and I'm completely out of touch.

Any thoughts on the above? I'm sure a (possibly younger) tech savvy member would kill these changes over a weekend.

I hope you have all been keeping well.

i’m happy to facilitate moving this entire forum structure to the Discord platform. it will be cost beneficial to do so as far as generating revenue for player sponsorship/prizes goes (and i can’t vote for setters getting a top up on his contract price that was considered low by the bomber-cheats any more :-( ). also discourse is a modern platform that copes with emoticons, link previews, images etc effortlessly.

i’m not interested in being a moderator or a anything like that and wouldn’t want to do the admin role without initial and a growing level of support from others as they learn the ropes.

the first thing would be to review the current structure of post themes and topics and see if it’s still fit for purpose and what other options a modern platform like Discord offers.

I agree with Wojee.

Re Upgrading to the latest version of phpBB .... it can be done, theoretically without too much difficulty, but requires a reasonable amount of time.

The site would also need to be rendered inactive for perhaps a day or two if moving to a new server and IP address. Unfortunately even simple transitions like moving to a new server are not without risk of complications and downtime ... and also require a reasonable degree of testing.

The current version of phpBB is significantly different, and the navy blue theme we are running here would most likely need a reasonable degree of effort to reproduce.

The MVP would need redevelopment, possibly a substantial amount of work. I tried to make it relatively self contained back in 2006-2011, but it still needs to be modified to be compatible with the various changes to the core phpBB code which have occurred between versions 3.0.11 and 3.3.8 . I have not yet had the time to make an assessment of how much effort this might take.

I can't take the time to assess until late Oct - early Nov. Also, like bluechucky, I'm not getting any younger.
