Hi Guys,

First post in nearly 18 months! I need to discuss a few things.

1. Google Ads is simply not generating the money required to pay the server fees. Right now we are down to $50 and we pay about $85 a month in hosting.
We need to move to a cheaper web host. I have no idea what impact that may have on performance.

I'm happy to cover any shortfall until November but after this point we'd need to consider how its going to be funded on an ongoing basis.

2. This site is running on really old software, I've looked at it a few times and it's going to need substantial time and effort to roll all the changes through and I have no idea how it may impact the MVP. I'm starting to think the best option is to archive this board at the end of the season and start a new instance of TC with the latest version of phpBB.

3. We need to find a new Admin. I just don't have the time or inclination to do the role any more. When I helped Camel start this site, I was still a software developer - I haven't been in that role in 12+ years, and I'm completely out of touch.

Any thoughts on the above? I'm sure a (possibly younger) tech savvy member would kill these changes over a weekend.

I hope you have all been keeping well.

Hey Chucky

Hopefully we can come up with something, I'm of no use to you sorry.

Hope you don't mind, I just made this into a global announcement to try and get more eyes on it.

Not sure how many people venture in to TalkingDirections

Good to hear from you Chucky.
I hope you're enjoying the wins.
I'm useless with technology. (I still don't know how to post pictures! )

But I'm happy to help financially where required.

On board with this as well anything that removes some of the crap I have posted over the years can only be a good thing

Who is the current host?

A fresh slate would be the best option, particularly given how many versions behind TC is, god knows what upgrading will break.

I'm nominally an admin but haven't logged onto the Admin console in probably a year or more

Maybe we should just ditch the player sponsorships and use that?

Save the site and two young careers with one action.

i don’t know what it costs, but the kids use Slack these days. the app is free and also has web browser access too. i use it for eight different “workspaces”.

also discord. started for gaming but lots of code forums on discord these days.

both might be a bit cheaper than renting hosting for a BB server.

Needs more 'magazine style content' to be viable.

Slack has some merit. 10k searchable messages at any one time.

Structure of the groups would need some thought.

A lot simpler private messaging and no requirements for maintaining code as a SaaS platform.

Happy to setup a pilot for some select posters for feedback.
