In the 70’s when kids were playing kick to kick - there was only one name they yelled out as the climbed up on the backs of their mates when trying to take a speccie and it was “Jesaulanko” - didn’t matter what team they barracked for either.

Jezza was before my time. The Buzz was my first favourite player as a very young kid but mostly before my time. I remember being sad that he left. I think I was 6 at the time.

Charlie has something special about him, but we've been robbed of 2 years. He certainly gets the crowd buzzing.

For me though, Fev was something special. Yes he was ill disciplined. Was generally a boofhead of the field. Was lazy at times but boy when he turned it on, did he light up the joint. That 2007 Essendon* game was incredible. Also moments like the Crows game from 50 on the boundary in the dying seconds. He was a freak. Not sure Charlie has that true freak factor as exciting as he is

The other excitement creator was Kouta when he was flying. Kouta could get the Carlton faithful up and about like few others.

Jezza, allround spectacular player; on the ground, in the air, in the heat and stuck a tackle.

His tackling was text book. Once you were caught by Jezza you had no chance.

Fortunate to have seen them all.

All brilliant players from different eras. All brought something special. In Curnow's case brings something special.

But Jezza, the real Jezza, was a freak. Did things you thought were impossible before he did them.

I remember an interview with Lou Richards, probably World of Sport.

Jezza had an uncanny ability to know where the ball was going to bounce

Lou asked Jezza how he picks the right side of the bounce to attack before the ball hits the ground?...this is a ball from a kick, handball or stray ball.

Answer from Jezza was something about him watching the ball and how its moving in the air.

Did Jezza see things in slow motion? Looked that way to us mortals.

Jezza without a blink...1 of the best I've seen - played tall or small in the same moments). Great mark, fast lead, freakish skills when the ball hit the deck, fearless, god he was good, I mean really, really good!

I'm old enough to have enjoyed Jezza but will stick with Fev

Reckon if Fev played in 2011, we go close to pinching a flag

Fev would've kicked 200 goals with the quality of mids from Jezza's era

Never seen anybody else who could clunk them running full tilt, could snap a drop punt from 50m, create a goal out of nothing while sitting on his backside or thread a drop punt from 60m out

They were both generational players and they both wore 25...Fev just for mine

he was that good. pity about his personality and maturity. i blâme Pagan. He did the same to Wayne Carey, pumped his ego up so big it just had to explode. Made everyone in the team defer to Fev even on who sits where on the bus (i made that up but i’m sticking with it!). Fev didn’t have the leadership training or maturity to handle it. spun sideways in so many ways, as many AFL players do but in the brightest of spotlights.

Not quite Farm's . Jezza was our best for sure .No one compares with Jezza . But as far as greatness , thats easy , " Big Nick ".

I'm with you there Mick. I saw Jezza play his first game, it was obvious from the start how bloody good he was.
Also if you're looking for the most influential player, it was Big John !!!

I'm with you guys on Big Nick's influence on the team and the game, and Jezza was the most freakish talent. Did stuff no one had seen before. Spectatcular.

I missed Big Nick's best years by a long way but can understand why he gets labelled great rather than freakish like Jezza.

Although Kouta was more brute strength than freakishness, he did make big strides with his skills rather than just being an 'athlete'. Consistency be damned, he's worth being considered as the most dominant player ever just on his 2000 output - no one could touch him (damn that knee injury!).

Having said that, still Jezza for mine. On top of the skills already listed here, he could also do Daicos snaps from the boundary before Daicos. He should copyright it.

Yeah Muzz ..................back in those days the closest thing i saw that was close to Jezza was that freakish player from Saints Darrel " The Doc " Baldock .

Having seen both at their height I agree entirely.

As far as Jezza's ( the real Jezza, not the Jezza come lately) freakish talent that no one had seen before, no one has seen it since.

Shame you didn't get to watch Crosswell Tom coz he was sensational when he was ON . When he had one of those days he was blindingly brilliant . But a bit spasmodic . Of course Jezza rarely had an off day . He was virtually always on . Like watching Rudolph Nureyev in footy boots it was .

To me the best player is one that could play almost anywhere and dominate the game.

Jezza could do it, Kouta could do it, Charlie might be able to do it, but we haven't seen enough yet. The Buzz and Fev were more single position players and so I would have them behind the others.

Speaking of Jezza. He was at the club today and there is a great photo of him and Diesel.
