This game came up in the prematch & I thought it needed its own thread, as we build up to the same opponent next week.

I watched it on youtube last night:

https://youtu.be/riXO-VGX_Y8?si=A2NSYtSCSRw0kV55

Really good game of footy, especially the first half. The good old days when we'd have a player kick 5 & two others kick 4 each.

Diesel wasn't bad for the opposition either :smoking:

Were you there? I was in the Ponsford with my Swans supporting father, the first final I ever attended, as a 13 y.o. Friday week I'm taking my 11 y.o. to his first final (& first night game), same teams playing. So there's a nice symmetry about this for me.

Yeah , i was there with one of my sons . It was a game we were expected to win . We did win but it was harder than everyone expected coz the Swans kept coming . Yep , the Diesel played well . Diesel was my sons non Carlton favourite player so was wrapt when he finally came home to us . Geez , how did we stuff that up . Too fat , too slow , something like that wasn't it .

It's great isn't it.
My daughter really wants to come next Friday night but she only just turned 9 and really struggles much past 8.30. If she was more of a night person, I'd consider it. Shame none of the finals (other than GF) are played during the day.
Guess there'll be plenty of opportunities for me to take her in future years.

Anyway, back to 1986. Don't remember too much of the actual but we played really well that day and the following week. Shame we couldn't finish the job.

Hey….

do you have one of those mini sugar
spoons…?

the ones that hang over the sugar bowl
on that arc thing…!

you can only fit a single cashew on one of
those…that’s some good sport right there…!

kindest regards tommi

ooooh…how about crisps with chop sticks…?

i can’t believe how much sense that makes…!

I don't recall the actual swans game as I don't think it was televised where I was living. From memory there was a pic in the paper of a scuffle with rod carter (no surprise there). What I do remember was the win meant carlton was playing hawthorn in the 2nd semi at vfl Park and it just so happened that I was able to attend. It must have coincided with school holidays and I certainly recall that one! Those were the days!

Diesel was sensational that day nearly stole it for Swans
We got the wobbles after having what I thought was an unassailable lead
Healy also was pretty good sftee half time too

1986 one that got away Hawthorn beat up on us in GF that year ie pummelled us into submission and then won the footy but was the reason why in 1987 in GF we got in first and dhowed we wouldnt be bullied again

Went to this one, was supremely confident of a win.
Until Healy and Williams started tearing the game to shreds.
Eventually our class got us through in a grind, but walked away thinking Williams could do the same in a grand final.
Nine years later he did, for us.
Alas, also came away thinking dunno if we can actually win it this year.

Healy still kicks himself over those misses and is ropable that Sydney had to play that final at the MCG.

I was there. One of my friends dad’s got 5 tickets from a supplier so I took a bunch of my mates.

Was my first final.
