I'd rather be a 'shit' 4-1 than a 'brave' 1-4.

Except I don't think we are 'shit', we can still beat teams by holding them off (a big plus).
We just need to transition to flogging them now, primarily for my health.

I wouldn’t travel from Busselton to watch a game of footy at the G even though you can fly direct to Tullamarine.
I’m talking about a couple of years ago when they played in Perth.

So get your facts straight

No. We'd be lucky to win Tattslotto.
We're 4-1 because we've won 4 games.

It’s about the process.

I haven’t watched a replay yet, but I’d be keen to hear from others any insight into how Martin & Owies went statless in the last quarter.

Jack put in a big third quarter, getting himself into the action at half back, but (Fisher aside) the crumbers and half forwards were a piss poor group in the second half.

Go and watch Jack Martin play live and focus on him. When others are jogging around the field, he sprints up and down the ground creating options, drawing defenders which creates space for his team mates and attacking the ball/player as hard as anyone.
If his body can hold together and he can stay on the park long enough to build his endurance, he'll be great value. I watched him yesterday when he didn't have the footy and couldn't believe his workrate and application.

Owies and Durdin didn't have big games but we still had 16 inside tackles which is very good. It's our connection between half back and half forward that's creating us issues.

I agree with the last statement.
I think your been very generous when it comes to Martin.
He doesn’t attack the ball/player as hard as anyone. That’s crap. Actually the opposite at times.
Martin coasts
He has had it easy as a footballer.
Looks a million dollars
Silky skills
But simply goes missing for too long
When tried in the midfield has been useless
I also reckon he hasn’t been fit enough his whole career and got away with it

I read your posts about Jack Martin so I go and watch him play the game.
He needs to be more consistent but he busts a gut. So your posts that equate players to dreamt up remuneration receive the contempt they deserve.

So before you slag off players, go along and watch them. Watch what they do with the ball but more importantly, watch what they do without it. Watch how and where they run. What they do to create instead of what you see in your TV screen. That's far more productive than posting crap about dropping player A and replacing him with player B at the drop off a hat. Especially when player B is injured, underprepared or just not up to it.

Martin is an overrated player.
He was brought to our club to bolster our midfield. Not to exclusively play as a half forward.
If he runs so well and busts a gut as you say why isn’t he playing further up the ground or at the stoppages.
Martin does have excellent hands and is very good over his head.
What he isn’t good act is going in and getting the hard ball from my observation.
I don’t go to too many games living in WA but he was pathetic against Hawthorn when we were beaten in the middle. That was my observation when I was observing at a game.
Another issue which relates to Martin and every player on the list.

We are a work in progress. At the minute Voss is 5 games into his coaching tenure. We clearly need to work harder and have a clear system when the opposition have the ball in space. We get scored against way too easy. It’s up to Voss to work on improving the performance so we are harder to play against
That’s what the top teams do.
Which means he has to work out which players can carry out the plan.
Hopefully Martin can be part of it but if his last quarter was anything to go by then he needs to improve
It was the main reason Teague got the bullet. Clearly it wasn’t all his fault. That’s why it’s imperative the board don’t get impatient and sack another coac before his contract is up.
It took a few years and a few stumbles before it all clicked for Melbourne Ditto Tigers
I still believe some blokes on our list play for themselves too much.
This needs to be weeded out

Vintage Keogh.

He was garbage in the ‘93 GF as well.

Yeah agree - that's why I put it in air quotes. I just think back to last year where we would regularly let teams get out to a 5, 6, 7 goal lead then bravely grind it back down to lose between 16 and 25 points. You don't win a premiership in April but you can sure as hell lose one then if you don't get off to a winning start. Obviously stuff to work on but I'm pretty happy with how we are rolling.

Yeah, we are definitely in a better position and we have now won half the games we won last year in the first 5 rounds.
It has been a phenomenal turn around.

Not many players played well that day in 93
The game when Martin played in the middle against Hawthorn was the game in Perth

Just watched the last half. The last 7 mins of the 3rd was full of errors and poor decisions. Composure was needed to just steady the ship.

Could not fault the commitment in the last 10 mins of the 4th. They got a couple of lucky bounces and a few goals resulted. We made a few silly mistakes that just kept them in it. Harry got mugged a few times and could have easily got a few frees infront of goal. Bombing it long on Durdins head was not the right play as Houston cleaned up a few times.

Lewis very good plus a few brain fades. A couple could have lowered the eyes and hit up a target when under pressure but didn't and we paid a price.

The goal that Charlie got in the last was because we chipped it around, kept possession, opened them up and presto, Charlie to the rescue. A Few times we could have spread wider and just denied them precious minutes with 5-15 simple possessions.

Not as bad as I thought at the time.

A work in progress and better 4-1 than what might have been. Wins in the bank worth their weight in gold early on.

Regards Cazzesman

Which replay? The game from the weekend or a random game in Perth a couple of years ago?

Ah, the old facts.
We were beaten in the middle but for some reason the AFL AP ( love, love technology) tells me Martin attended and total of ZERO centre bounces. He had 15 disposals, kicked 2 goals & had three stoppage clearances in a shortened game though. He was also ranked in our best players that day.

If you don't like him that's fine but i think your expectations might have you confusing Martins...we have Jack
Dustin plays for the Tigers

Just on that composure bit what is it with the decision to keep bombing long to contests from our back 50 when the opposition has momentum. It just felt like we fell into that trap even though it was bloody obvious they were going to win it back and eventually score....

Interestingly one of the few times we actually possessed it short with a few changes of angles we got the ball to a wing to Newnes who went longer to Charlie and he kicked that last goal...

It doesnt seem like a big problem to fix but it looks like we either cant or wont do it. Even that last kick from Docherty to Mckay felt low % and under the circumstances the safer play would have been to find someone 20-30 away in a pocket.

Not sure if it's work rate, trust or a combination of both but we need to sort that out before it costs us games

Mate I was there and he was shit.
Stats don’t tell the whole story
We were flying early then Setters and Kennedy couldn’t get near it after quarter time
Walsh had a shocker Murphy typically soft game
Cripps and Curnow the only blokes who could hold their head up
Martin goes into the middle and was monstered by the Hawks when it really mattered
Hawthorn slaughtered us after quarter time
The thing I see with Martin is he doesn’t go for the ball instantly
Some blokes have no fear to go for the aggot when contact is coming
Martin is soft in this area
He got his goals when we were flying and when the game was over or junk time
He had zero I repeat zero influence when it was needed
Only Cripps and Curnow could hold their head up high that day
I knew that Martin wouldn’t make it as a mid that day
Am I correct on that score 2 years later?

We are at 102% that's low with no cushion against any touch up we will probably cop along the way.
If you get a side down, then finish the friggin' job !

But, but, but! The best team in the competition by a far margin had Port Adelaide goalless at half time last week. Port came out after half time and had 11 scoring shots to Melbournes 6 and outscored them. I don't recall any Melbourne supporters having a whinge about beating a preliminary final side from the past 2 years.
We're demolishing teams in bursts at the moment and it's getting us over the line.
I recall years ago when we put the foot down in the premiership quarter and blew teams away. That was celebrated.
FFS, some of you lot would find a pay packet on the ground and whinge about how much tax was taken out.

No one has said we're a complete unit. The coaches are continually telling us we're a work in progress. Take the 4-1 and enjoy it. Save the saltiness for when we lose.

"Saltiness', Really? All I'm saying is when you have an opportunity, take it !
Late in the year a poor % will bite any finals contender on the arse. History bears that out.
My opinion only, you obviously differ. Fine, Play On !
