Walsh, Weitering, Owies & Carroll all expected to be available this weekend.

Martin a test.

Hewitt to miss another week (at least).

Bulging disc apparently based on a previous injury he had in 2020 at the Swans.

With the right treatment it will be manageable, but they are prick of a thing to deal with.

That's sad, but better now, than in Finals.

He's been out for 10 days now.
If its inflammation, bulging disc, I dont know the diff anyway.
2 more weeks and that should settle down, even if its a stress fracture.
3 weeks out, and its effectively a month off.

Fab 4 can still rule the roost: Cripps, Walsh, Kennedy, Cerra, and who knows, Setterfield might do a bit in there too. Fisher does.
Dow deserves a chance, despite being quiet last couple games, heavily tagged. But theres already a Fab 4. We can cover Hewett.

Tell us, how bad?

What would Hewett have to do to get on the ground in a couple weeks if it has flared up?

A bulging disc is typically caused by weak erector spinae muscles not sufficiently supporting the spine in a neutral position when loaded. i.e. lifting, twisting, bending etc.

If it is the first time it has happened, you can usually wait for the inflammation to settle down (whilst also using NSAIDs), then try to treat the muscles with heat and deep tissue massage to increase the blood flow and get function back. If you don't treat it, the muscles can stay in spasm even after the acute pain has subsided.

If it is a recurring injury, it is most likely to be an ongoing muscle imbalance issue, where the other muscles around the mid-section tighten to support the spine and compensate for weak/damaged the erector spinae muscles. These muscles can then also become disfunctional due to being locked in spasm for a long periods of time.

With an AFL player like Hewett, not only is he a very fit and healthy young man, but he will also have access to too notch massage treatment, aqua therapy, medication, physiotherapy etc. You would expect that he would be back within a few weeks to a month at worst, depending on how severe it is.

If he does not improve over the next month they could roll the dice for finals and give him a CT guided cortisone injection (nerve root block). Unfortunately that is only a stop gap to temporarily get rid of the pain.

Let's just hope that it is only a minor setback and more of a precaution than anything long term.

Just found the article from 2020. He had surgery on it, indicating that it is likely another disc that is bulging now. This is pretty common in people who get a discectomy. It instantly treats the thing causing the symptom, but not the cause of the problem, then over time the next disc does the same thing.

Bad backs run in our family. My Dad and my younger brother have had 2 discectomies each and still have ongoing issues. I have had a bulging disc and bad sciatica since 2009, but have treated it using natural methods. It still flares up from time to time, but is manageable if I look after myself properly. When it is bad the pain is unbearable.

Too right Tommi.

At its worst, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Extremely debilitating and depressing....

I'm sure (hopeful) the club will be doing what is best for his long term health.

I would not like to think the club would approve a jab just so he can play and not resolve the issue even if it takes time.

Yep I have a constant issue with my back, 2 lower discs almost fused together.
When it goes off (spasm) the pain in unbearable.
Swimming has been a God send for me.
