I was thinking the other day about this given the recent events with the Australian Cricket Team and the recently released information regarding Simon Goodwin.

With so many coaches now does it matter as much who is the head coach.

Carlton have certainly emphasized the importance by sacking the last six people who have been given the privilege position or the poison chalice before their contract was up.

It seems there are two things at play here

1
The collective coaching group is the important thing. What is one person’s weakness is compensated by another’s strength. No better example than Simon Goodwin /Choco Williams , Justin Langer/ Andrew Mc Donald. And collectively what the coaching group can come up with that is innovative and sets us apart from the other 17 teams
2
How the leaders of the playing group play such a pivotal role in getting the best out of the playing group

I have made no secret in my desire to have Jacob Weitering as captain with Sam Walsh his deputy.
Cripps is not captain material. Too much like one of the boys.
He doesn’t demand the highest standards from his teammates. At least that’s the impression I get.
Weitering and Walsh look to me to have the traits to get the best out of this playing group

To be honest it’s not about win and losses for me but not accepting unfit players and soft acts.
And taking action not just saying it.

To me the only two qualities a great head coach needs are to be an exceptional communicator and a very good personnel manager. I'm sure they can have input, but all the day to day stuff is done by line coaches. You need to be able to harness them and have them pulling in the same direction and be able to manage the media/be the club figurehead.

The head coach still needs to know what direction to have everyone working in.

It matters, but it isn't the only thing. Can't just have a gun coach and crap/mediocre other off-field staff. Its how they all work together to achieve the best environment to get the best out of the players, and there is no one size fits all. But you need board/CEO and coach all alligned in terms of purpose.

You can't really compare a cricket coach to an AFL coach, AFL coach has always had more power/influence than coaches in cricket.

A good coach can definitely improve the organisation but a poor coach has the potential to have far more impact.

If your top dog is a gun it flows from there . No debate for mine . Your number one man has to be a gun . Only one man steers the ship . ..................history tells you the top coaches continually turn over there assistants .

For mine Australia's World Cup win at Tippety Runs cricket means Jack Shit.
Tippety Runs cricket is a bastardisation of the game.

We may as well have a World Cup in AFLX. Equally pointless.

Langer took backseat and essentially McDonald and di Venuto took over.

Not sure why keep a coach like langer for another 3-4 years to essentially not coach.

The point I was making was that perhaps the role of the senior coach in top level sport whatever sport your talking about isn’t as important now because there are so many coaches at a club and that the culture is largely driven by the playing group.
That’s why your leaders within the playing group are more important than the senior coach these days.
Langer was obviously too autocratic and too old school.
The one thing constant in life is change.
Another constant is the revolving door of senior coaches at Carlton

One thing the club must be on field above anything else is to be harder.
We were a soft team under Teague.
How much is that accountability driven by your player leadership and by your senior coach?

Captain in cricket far more important than coach.

Coach in footy far more important than captain.

As Vossy said yesterday, he, as the Head Coach, has his hands on the levers to make changes during the game. Its his call, after I expect a more democratic process than was the case in the old days. The Coaching group work on a lot of each others ideas during the preseason that I wouldn't be surprised if an Assistant has a light bulb moment during the game, and the Head Coach decides to go with that.

Ultimately there's only one decision maker in the Coaches Box.

But what I'd like to know is the consultation process during the game, if it takes place like Cummings does with his vice captains warner and smith? Does Cripps have influence in the Coaches Box.

I think we have a modern coach in the Box we can trust in 2022, moreso than we've had in the last decade or two. IMO

Yep.

It all boils down to control - the ability to impact the flow of the game.

The assistants & runners are all agents for the head coach.
