Post subject:  Team of Captains

I have a framed montage of all Carlton captains from VFL to date and it got me thinking - a best 22 of Carlton captains. Not like an All-Australian team, but picked to be a balanced squad. Now I have only seen 16 of them play and of those I have only scant recollection of a couple. Nevertheless I have relied on reports of players starting with player number 1 ie our initial VFL Captain, Jimmy Aitken and on through to Docherty & Cripps. My methodology was to start with those in the Carlton Team of the Century (including emergencies), add those who I suspect would have been in it had their career not been in whole or part before or after the 20th Century and them slot in around the edges players to fill the remaining spots.

In the end I settled on this team:

Comben Chitty Walls
F Gill P O'Brien A McKay
Bradley McGregor Judd
Johnston Clover Jesaulenko
Fitzpztrick Kernahan A. Clarke
Nicholls Koutofides Henfry
Barassi Hands "Mocha" Johnson Silvagni

BARRASI ON THE BENCH!

Who have I missed out? Surely there is someone I missed - probably an obvious one.

Cripps replaces Barrasi who was past his prime by the time he reached CFC.
Fitzpatrick I always thought to be a little overrated. Put him on the bench and Hands in the starting 18.

IMHO.

Blown me away ianh.

History of captains...haven't thought that deep before.
I have to get my eldest son onto this concept. he loves the history of the great foundation club.

I will have a look, think, absorb before I respond.
So may greats.

Can you give us the list of captains if that's easy enough...and I'll take it from there.

Fitzpatrick was sooo important for us during his time at the club as captain, but I also never really rated him as a legend footballer.
I was spoilt by blue eyed Nichols and Jones as his side kick...and nothing came close to that combo for me...Jones wasn't a captain...hang on, was he?

If we’re selecting a balanced squad based on playing ability, Murphy should be in the team IMO. Perhaps ahead of Barrassi or Ansell Clarke.

I do not expect anyone to support me on this…

Most here seem to forget that for the vast majority of his career, Murphy was a very, very, good player. If he had retired a couple of years or even a year earlier he would be seen in a completely different light.

And as I said earlier, Barrassi was past his prime by the time he reached us.

Fair call on Barassi Teddy. But as a leader he was magnificent. He had an aura about him. When he spoke players listened. Hoping Voss has similar effect.

Absolutely. AFLCA Player of the Year, All-Australian, multiple B&Fs. He should be remembered as a very talented player who remained loyal throughout a tough period in the club’s history.
