Very good draw , play the pies twice and good run of winnable games In the first half of the season

McKay and curnow could do a roughy and buddy show this year ..

The result against North in round 7 could almost sum the season up.

Looks good on paper in terms of who we play twice.

AFL have put us Easter Sunday and Mothers Day again though....

First 2 rounds will be tough. Can't afford to start the season 0-2.

If you are any good the fixture don't matter . Take ' em as they come . If we are to become a good side then we must relish the challenge . Making ' namby pamby woosy excuses don't cut it in my world . Bring it on no matter what i say .

I’m picking up what you’re putting down Mick, but a soft draw can be the difference between 4th & 7th, or 8th & 12th.

Maybe couple of wins… an extra 20-30% across the season.

Is there really such a thing as a soft draw? All games are hard and some of the lower sides (eg. North) give us as much trouble as anyone.

And how do you label it a good or bad draw before the season starts? We don’t know how good or bad specific sides are until we’re at least a month or so into the season.

The fixture is important to the members and for sponsors (time/location/broadcasting of games) but the players should have an “anywhere, anyone, anytime” attitude.

As Mick said - take ‘em as they come…

We’ve struggled against the bottom sides because we are a bottom side.

North, GC, Hawthorn & Adelaide have filled four of the last five spots two years running.

Last season’s top six finished five games clear of ninth. Bank on them to at least win enough games to make the eight again. We’ve been handed a good draw, not having to play any of them twice.

I might be in the minority, but I don’t think you can accurately forecast how soft/hard a draw is. Anything can happen once the season starts, including injuries to key players.

The previous season’s placings aren’t a reliable indicator. Hell, the previous week’s results aren’t always a reliable indicator. We need to respect every opponent. One week at a time etc.

When the fixture is released, the only thing I’m looking at is the location/time of games from a fan’s perspective. Once the season starts, I begin to pay attention to who our next opponent is and how they are travelling.

I say this every year at the same time.
The draw is a joke
In a 18 team comp to play 5 teams twice is farcical.

You can’t have a 34 game season buts what wrong with 27 .
That would mean you would play 10 teams twice.
Start the season in late February.
Finish the season early October
Or if that doesn’t make you happy every team plays the other once.
Then split the comp into 3 mini comps of Six
Top
Middle
Bottom
Top six battle for top spots
2 of the mids six play for final spots
Bottom six play for top picks in the draft

Without wanting to get too far off track, I reckon a 17 week season with the same finals structure and finishing date would be just fine.

Do away with the mid-season draft, but move the pre-season draft to the middle of April.

I don't often agree with either keogh or Crusader, but I do today :).

Either the 17 + mini-leagues or a simple 17-game season would be fine. If the latter, then bring back State of Origin and make it big, like rugby league does... but make it better by having dedicated SoO weekends rather than compromising the main comp. Or if there's no appetite for Origin, have a 17-round league and a separate knockout comp akin to the FA Cup in English football, with other leagues added to the mix for added thrills and spills :D. Axe the @#$%&! bye, I hate that shit.

Option 1.

17 rounds where each team would play each other once ... then fixture another 8 rounds on the fly to balance. Every team in the eight after 17 would play each other twice. Teams outside the eightwould not play any team in the eight twice. Yea ... there still would be anomalies but it would be better. 25 round season. If players object to more games, then reduce minutes (although I hate that).

Option 2.

34 round season. Reduced minutes ...

Option 3...
(God knows where I posted the details of this years ago)
Play every team twice...
No player can play more than 22 games in home and away..
Rest and injuries will make up the bulk..
Strategic selections will make up the rest..
Will make games more even, the fixture irrelevant...

Get on with it AFL...
Obviously they aren't paid to think

Go Blues!

That’s a good idea but you’d also need to either reduce the number of teams or increase the playing list size to cover the increased demand on available players.

Originally I had included increase list size (my preference) , but you could go with fewer players...
You can also have an age profile on larger lists (e.g. We would have kept Simmo... You also have a VFL reserve type team with the bigger list... remember that idea?

Go Blues
