Agree but, Dustin Martin's ''yellow and black'' was powerful.

Looking forward through my rose coloured binoculars, I like to imagine a Carlton player / coach taking the cup on GF day then saying.
''We ARE the Navy Blues'' !!!
Powerful if you think about it. :smoking:

No need to be frustrated just because some don't get the "Send us" phrase.

If you stick with the original, there is no confusion.

Within a deeply Christian Society, bathed in religious culture, in that era when the club song was written it was believed and penned that "They" (being those in the Heavens) like to send us" players with god given talents.

God save the queen....its all about the Gods. People forget how deeply religious Australia was pre 70's.

Simple.

Send up is as much an American term in the 50's as is the back to front baseball cap.

Why confusion ? It's ''send us'' that's it ! Not really confusing.
Reminds me of an old mate of mine, a Collingwood fanatic, who confessed one boozy day at the footy how much he liked the song.

I know lots pof opposition supporters who "[rvately" admit they love to sing the Carlton song

I always assumed “they” referred to the recruiters in the Golden Square area...

Now I don't know what to believe.

When I thought it was "up", back in the 80s I thought it was referencing sending players up from the twos.

With "us" I never knew who "they" were...... And with all due respect to Bondi I still don't.

I always thought it references the opposition and we'll keep our end up against them

You're both wrong.

It's "they like to spend up"...... which of course relates to salary cap breaches.

And they'll know that they've been playing against the famous old dark Blues.

But who is the 'they' in relation to 'they like to send us'

Also note that some websites have 'we're the only team all Carlton knows' - I always have it as 'old'

Wait, is it 'they' plural or 'they' singular?
Maybe it was ahead of its time and just referring to the coach. An ex-Kangas coach?

We’re the best - on top of the mountain. Send your champions up to challenge and, by the time that we’re done with them, they will know why.

Interesting take, you're suggesting that the champions are the other clubs players.

Hey when I was a kid I received a tape (like, an actual audio tape) from the club. It had two songs on it. The regular theme song on side A, and another song on side B.

I think it was called "Blue is our colour".

Had a voice-over from Braddles and I think Sticks.... we're talking early 90's I think.

Musta been '94 actually because I was about 12 years old and I was supposed to be practicing for my Bar Mitzvah using the tape the Rabbi gave me. And secretly when there was no-one around, I'd put the Carlton tape in and sing along to that for hours instead.

Anyway one day my grandmother walks in thinking she's gonna see her first grandchild practicing diligently for his ascent into manhood at age 13, instead I'm rocking out to the theme song. And she's old of course, and a bit slow and hard of hearing so it took her a moment, and eventually she says this isn't your Bar Mitzvah tape!!! You're listening to something else!!!

And then she goes: "Why are the men singing about Baby Goose?" it's just silly. Why listen to such nonsense. And out she goes disgusted.

To this day, sometimes when we sing the song (which isn't often enough) we still sing "WEEEEEE, AAAARE the BABY GOOSE"

Thank you all for your time.

Correct.

The champions of Collingwood - i.e. the best that Collingwood can offer.

I suppose it would come from the medieval derivations of the word, which had a more representative connotation.

My favourite line to belt out loud.

This can't be true. But does support my line of thinking, if we can't work out what we are singing about how relevant are the lyrics?
