Exactly. So much of this.

I've said it before but any hand wringing over Josh Kennedy was in my opinion moot point. We had a coach that crucified him and a leadership (and supporter base) who were impatient. If he stayed on our list no way is he a 700 goal superstar retiring with a premiership to his name and Colemans

Various aspects to list management. Agree his drafting was hit and miss and jury is still out on others.
However, he did an exceptional job getting our TPPs down which in turn enabled us to have a real crack at some FA's.
Again some misses, but think his trading was good. In particular what we good for players we traded out such as the Gibbs trade and the "Hendo pick".

Agree on TPP, and his first draft with all those first round picks he had.

Gibbs deal was a pearler.
The Hendo pick was straight forward.

He had it pretty easy being allowed to Trade for picks and rebuilding a whole list.
He will be judged when all his recruits have played their careers... Dow has a breakthough year....at another club?

For the record I'm not in the SOS is the greatest list manager of all time camp. Nor am I he was total shit camp.
I think he did a reasonable job overall. Not a great and not a bad job. Reasonable.

I'm with you too.

Job got done well.
Look at our list now.
Its still unfinished, but what a spine, and midfield group.
Just needed a couple wingers to work instead of LOB and DOW and SETTERS and he'd be a legend.
Doesnt work like that though. Austin to add the finishing touches.

Academy.

Of that list, only Hewett came from the ACADEMY.

Swans played in a GF in 1996 and got beaten up by North thugs. Not one Academy player in that team.
They managed to stay in Finals every year till missing in 2000, 2002,
They did get help from COLA till the Buddy deal in 2013. Buddy started playing in 2014.

Swans won the 2005 and 2012 Flags with not one ACADEMY KID.
They continued to make Finals every year since except for 2009, 2019, 2020

The first Academy kid was Heeney in 2014, Mills in 2015, Blakey in 2018 and Gulden and Brayden in 2020.
Still cost them a first rounder, everytime, which they had, except for the Carlton mad kid, Gulden pick 32, but Academy has helped, but not to win a Flag, nor make Finals, till 2021.

There's something more going on in their favour than just the Academy.

I doubt there will be an Academy kid picked this year, or next. Who knows.
I watch them. My kid is in the Academy.

Great culture. No flower. Developed to play senior footy. Unconditionally put their body on the line or they dont get picked. Great coaching lineage. Great assistants...and the Training from Under 11's is ideal development.

Other teams try and copy their culture model. I don't know what happened with all the flower at Richmond. They wouldn't last at Swans with their Chopstick episodes, nightclub brawls, rooting the staff...just wouldn't happen at the Swans. Its a great club, and they know my son and I are Carlton through and through, just as that Marcellin kid Gulden was.

There's tens of thousands of Swans fans in Melbourne.
I think they have more than 8000 Members just in Melbourne.
I went to the Carlton Swans game with one of those Melburnians...loyal as hell...and went off at the footy...I would never have picked it either.

As the pressure mounts Vossy is getting a clearer picture of who is not only capable of getting to September but taking us deep into September and who isn't. Those that can't will get moved on pretty soon.

Gibbons still dirty by the sound of it.
He posted "Nick Austin is a gun lol" and then deleted it.

Yeah, it's become more and more obvious as we've begun winning less and less ball.

Would obviously help a little if guys like Williams, Boyd, Cuningham and Philp were available. I'm not sure we can play Owies and Motlop in the same side that often. Neither are particularly quick. Obviously helps when Durdin is in. And we probably need to keep pouring games into Honey.

George Hewett ranks 2nd in the competition for centre clearances per game.

Let's hope his back injury isn't career threatening.

Mids mids mids and small/medium forwards should be the focus going forward.

It's actually quite sad how much Hewett's form and availability mirror that of the team's. One player shouldn't matter so much.

Hewett's centre clearance stats by round. Ever since the Sydney game (round 10) Carlton's form has been patchy.

Round 18 Loss 55-85 2
Round 17 Win 116-53 2
Round 16 Loss 78-93 1
Round 15 Win 81-50 2
Round 14 Loss 66-81 1
Round 13 Win 80-54 1
Round 11 Loss 75-79 1
Round 10 Win 102-87 6
Round 9 Win 105-75 3
Round 6 Loss 62-97 4
Round 5 Win 94-91 8
Round 4 Loss 62-92 6
Round 3 Win 74-73 6
Round 2 Win 102-90 4
Round 1 Win 101-76 2

George also ranked #1 in the comp for disposals per turnover amongst players that average 20 disposals or more.

Squeaky clean.

Think there's going to be an issue with how we balance the TPP vs the premiership window.

46 on the list currently with 10 rookies:

Delist:
Dow
Fogarty
Parks (r)
Cuningham
Williamson
Newnes
Curnow
Hayes (r)
Setterfield
One of C.Durdin or McDonald depending on McDonald injury status

Leaves Cottrell/O'Brien/Owies to be promoted or risk losing them.

Promote all 3, leaves probably 4 senior spots for trade period/draft (could have 6 but club has rarely done so in recent years) and 2 cat a/2 cat b spots on the rookie list.

I think if we're half serious about finals, you probably keep two of Fogarty/Cuningham/Newnes/Setterfield for depth, rather than the necessity of turning their list spot over to a minimum wager. Instead - McKay, Charlie, TDK, McGovern, JSOS, Motlop, Docherty, Pittonet and a few fringe types out of contract next year that need fitting in.

Wonder if North would consider Jack Martin as a cap dump rather than cutting prematurely?
