Whilst we’re looking back at the whipping boys etc it got me thinking about the “ones that got away”.

Stephen Oliver, the “Bradman from the Bush” will always be a loss. Had he not been at a club with Stephen Kernahan and Earl Spaulding he might have had a few more opportunities and persisted a little longer. Only the second player in the Bendigo League to kick 1000 goals.

But my number one is still Laurie Angwin. I saw him do things at training that I’ve never seen anyone do and with the exception of Gary Ablett Sr I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player with such confidence in his own talent. In just his fourth and last game for us (against West Coast) I remember him marking about 65 out and about ten metres in from the boundary. Instead of kicking it long to the top of the square or finding a player on the lead he ran straight at the man on the mark, balked around him to the boundary side and slotted it on his right boot from about 45 out on the boundary. I’ve never seen another two metre tall player do anything remotely like it.

If Kouta, Ablett Senior and Robbie Warnock had had a threesome then Laurie could have been their offspring. Unfortunately talent will only get you so far son.

Who are your “ones that got away”?

Does the Buzz count because he was only with us for 3 seasons?

Angwin the obvious one.
But Hartlett and Watson both had the weapons we needed in kicking but unfortunately not much else.

I am afraid that Marchbank and Cunningham might make this thread in future

Not sure if he qualifies for this, but always thought Justin Murphy was going to be a superstar. Never got there.

Oliver was one for sure, but he was getting paid more to do less at Castlemaine.

I saw good things from Setanta as well, until Fev crushed his spine. It was all too high, too far, too soon after that… and who here among us wouldn’t have sunk the slipper into Cameron Cloke? Taking a dive in an intra-club for Christ sake.

Good call on Porter. He played a blinder at Prince's Park against North one year. Maybe not on the stats sheet but taps to advantage.... Very bloody good.

Never quite there.

Tony Southcombe. He was driving down and back from Bendigo to train and play, went to sleep driving home and ran off the road and decided to pull the pin. I believe he later regretted his decision, and Carlton got him to talk with Oliver to try and get him to commit.

His debut against Essendon* in 97 was a blinder also.

I loved Tony Pickett.
From memory he was from Tasmania and would fly in for the weekend, play and then go home in his first year.
Wore the number 30.
