Oh that Angwin goal was something else.

Does anyone know if there is footage of that Angwin goal? I’ve been hearing about it for years but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it.

I can't find anything though I feel like I saw it somewhere not all that long ago. It wasn't so much that it was anything spectacular for a goal of the year contender, it was that he made it look so easy for a guy that was 200 CM. Baulked a player without even thinking about it and slotted it on the run. I remember thinking at the time, it's an elite talent that does that so easily.

Think of that footage of a young kouta plucking it one handed and slotting it on the run. Wasn't the spectacle of the goal as a little moment that made you take notice and think this kid has something special.

I got the same feeling watching Kemp do the blind turn in the middle of the ground and put the foot down before he fluffed the kick. Just a small moment in the scheme of the game that made you smile because that's not something you see from a kid in their 3rd or 4th game.
Laurie's goal was one of those moments but alas it wasn't to be. Let's hope young Kemp was a glimpse into the not too distant future.

That’s a pretty perfect summary Cranium.

Only thing I’d add is that if you spent time watching him at training you’d see similar on a regular basis. It wasn’t just the skills that were mind blowing but the confidence he had in using them.

This is the only footage I could find of Angwin playing for Carlton-
https://youtu.be/y9w-rdRTjp8

It’s the Waite game vs Melbourne (2003). If anyone is going to watch it, I recommend stopping it at 3/4 time.

Laidler seemed to be a pretty astute pick up for a while, then he got injured in 2012 and Malthoused in 2013. McInnes also showed a bit before the same happened to him.

A couple of good ones there. I genuinely thought Laids could be a future captain.

Worth noting that we have become specialists in picking amazing talent on 'class' and potential rather than demonstrated performance in the last 20 years, ever since we were hobbled by the salary cap penalties from 2002.
We've obviously tried to jump a rung on the talent stakes by hoping that some freak but damaged talent would suddenly hit their potential at the Blues, either via the draft or trades (see multiple GWS).
Highlights of this approach were picking Yarran in 2008, and Menzel in 2012.

We picked Yarran ahead of Daniel Rich, Ziebell, Phil Davis, Sidebottom & Shuey. At the time, only Rich would have genuinely been in that conversation but I reckon Sidebottom would have been the best pick. From memory, Collingwood picked him based on his 10 goal performance in a TAC Cup GF? Which was a similar reason to why they went for Dale Thomas at no.2 in 2005. As distinct from us who seem to prioritise 'class' over grunt or big game performance.

To be honest, there was not too much behind Menzel apart from Grundy, who we should have gone for but at the time we already had two ruckmen and had just recently traded out Jacobs b/c we had too many ruckmen. (NB: Surely, if we didn't go for Menzel we would have gone for Jaksch....)

Of course, the other shocker was picking Kane Lucas in 2009 ahead of Talia, Fyfe and Max Gawn! But that doesn't fit in this thread b/c he was never a Coodabeen nor shoodabeen...!

Yeah pretty much the entire draft buildup in 2012 was the Menzel/Jacksch debate.

On another note, Brad Pearce. I remember him having a laser for a left foot and being a great 2IC in the 1995 forward line. Was great to watch.

Troy Bond.
Drafted him when we desperately lacked pace. I had such high hope of him starring in Blue, was shattered he left so soon.

We all knew him from his Dandenong days Bondi when the VFL was the Association . Not just Frosty but a lot of others given the right circumstances could have made it .

Justin Davies - showed some promise during a bleak period and won us a game against the pies in, I think, 2004.

Paul Bower - half way through 2009 he was in our top few in the B&F and becoming a quality tall defender. I thought he’d be an All Australian one day. Never went on with it after that.

2 others that haven’t been mentioned; Tom Bell - was talked about as Kouta-like and his career suffered for his relocation back to QLD. And Rhys O’Keefe. Don’t recall much about him other than us keeping him on the list for an exceptionally long time while he could never get on the park. Was talked about as one of the best kicks at the club, but we never got to see him have much of a crack at it.

THIS - especially with regards to players with a history of serious or recurring injuries.

I see Yarran has been mentioned, but we did get quite a bit out of him compared to some of the wasters who never even got started because of their lack of maturity or inability to get fit. It's just a shame his career went off a cliff, he was quite brilliant for a time.

Was thinking of him, too. Not convinced he was a very good player to begin with, but he could give it a roost.
