I guess the point I was making is that no team truly has a best 22 anymore.

Far more interested in the quality of blokes who miss out on the flag winning side than those who do. And why.

Both GF sides had at least 10 blokes who could reasonably slot into that 22 but didn't. Looking at the variance, or lack thereof, in the sides put up, we've got 4-6

Plowman Jones Newman
Saad Weitering Stocker
Williams Cripps Docherty
Fogarty Curnow Silvagni
Fisher McKay Martin
De Koning Walsh Cerra

Dow Curnow Hewett Honey (Setterfield)

I’d be keeping Docherty, if fit, out of the back 6. He looked shaky on several occasions this year and would benefit from playing on the wing. The only exception to this is if we find a defensive structure that cuts down the number of 1:1 contests our back 6 are exposed to and a structure where Doc finds his confidence again.

I’m also playing Williams off a wing, rather than half back. Let’s try him in the area of the ground we paid him for. Get him on the wing and bursts in the centre.

I have Fogarty in, where most don’t. It’s probably him and Setterfield for the last spot in the 22. If Ed Curnow plays mid, then we need Fogarty to balance our forward setup. However, if Ed plays mostly half forward, then Setterfield might be the better option.

I only have 1 ruck. In reality I think TDK and Pitto will both play most weeks and Pitto will be first ruck. That’s not what I’d do, but it’s what I expect.

First time I’ve left McGovern out of my best 22.

Great summary cecil. I like your reasoning. I get it.

I'm not a Fogerty fan any more. I was, but that doesn't mean I'm right.

So true spooky.

Depth and developing depth is our charter in 22 as we rise up the ladder.

As true as that is, when they do slot into the best 22 for an extended period of time, they lose the mythology of how good they are.

i.e. you put one of Soldo, Graham, Collier-Dawkins, Dow, Stack etc into the Tigers lineup that won 3 in 4 years, and they look like guns. Put all of them in the lineup, and they dont even make finals.

Geelong have been masters of this over the years. They keep dragging no names into a succesful lineup that dont go on and do anything special. You know the ones, Charlie Constable, Billy Smedts, Darcy Lang, Nakia Cockatoo, and they all get these rave reviews off one game where they show a bit, and then get traded with a lot of hype and no substance. The good ordinary types that can fill a hole in all teams, that dont have any real tricks.

If speed matters, these 5 clocked the fastest speeds in 2021:

Adam Saad 35.75km/h
Mitch McGovern 34.70
Jack Martin 34.22
David Cuningham 33.98
Josh Honey 33.84

All 5 are on the list for 2022

Cuningham, still recovering from the ACL he did in round 10 and likely to rejoin the team by midseason

That's probably where McGovern did his hammy so we wont be seeing a repeat of that.

I don't think it was because we discussed this feat prior to him doing his hammy, but I think you're right that it will play on his mind and play on his mind about pushing the limits again.

Still only 18yo.
A good preseason should do him wonders.

I really hope Sam Philp , gets opportunities in 2022 to play midfield and produces good form.
He’s quick & has some grunt , cannot remember his kicking ability,
can someone pls shed some light.
Thanks

From what he's shown thus far, he can kick a set shot at goal and also on the run from 35...that's all I've seen.

Looks balanced...but its been a case of a small sample given he's played a couple games

We are SO desperate for a wingman. I know philp is fast, but if he has endurance he needs to try make that his position. It's a massive weakness for us. Comparing Hunter / Smith or Langdon / Brayshaw with our wingman is honestly daunting. Would love to see Philp have a crack at it there. Such an important position these days with so much two way transition going through the wings.

Its not actually their fastest speed that matters. Its speed over the first 3-5 meters that's important for the midfielders. Good to know that McGovern has speed though which would be very useful as a backman.

Brayshaw was the perfectly designed inside midfielder. He has now become a leading wingman. I am pretty sure we can get several of our players to specialise in that role.
For mine, I'd like to see Stocker, Fisher, JSOS, & Williams rotate through the midfield for additional depth and variation. Stocker probably should become a core midfielder along with Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett & Dow.

I’m enjoying Stocker’s work in defence and am in no rush to move him.

100%. I think a must in a really strong size is a tough as nails half back. Lovely kick and a real enforcer down there. I've got no issue with him playing 200 games at half back. Particularly as we are so well stocked for inside midfielders. Saad, Stocker and Doc would be a great combo of smaller defenders they're all so different. Williams will be on ball before Stocker. Adds the speed and goal kicking which we lack a bit in there.

I think if we were better, or at least not so woeful as we have been, at defensive transitions, we’d hardly notice the lack of specialist wings on the list.

I hope our centre line problems have been largely fixed.

Cerra one one wing with his two way running and great kicking.

In the centre the addition of Hewitt, a fit Cripps, and the continued development of Dow. Maybe Kemp and Stocker.

A choice of O'Brien, Kemp, Fisher, and a couple of others to hold the other wing.

Rose coloured glasses but I think that maybe we will be okay.

True KP should be where we are looking.
