Such a big man with a large family and will now have to have a funeral consisting of 10 people. Bloody covid.

Did great things for the club, and did terrible things for the club believing they were great things

He did it for the club, for better or worse.

Condolences to the Elliott family. RiP

Uncanny timing as the club launches into a new era.

He spent the last part of his life living two blocks from my business and I had dinner with him once a long time back. Despite his public image as an uncouth pig he came across as incredibly intelligent and remarkably polite.

I was never a fan of him as our president but I found myself liking him as a person.

Hosted a grand final day when I was living in Bangkok in the mid 2000’s and John was one of the guests that we flew up from Melbourne.

He was a passionate football person - I sat with him throughout the swans (vs Eagles) win and he entered every score into his footy record (we brought dozens up for the event). A tear in his eye as the finals siren sounded and the Sydney footy club flooded the field, he said to me that’s what footy is about, sharing the victory with all involved.

We went on and had a bit of fun in and around Bangkok afterwards. Late into the night - both of us pretty pissed - he stared me down and said don’t ever say “pigs arse” again in my presence. Sorry John.

The quote attributed to him about a pigs nether regions was never said by John.

It came about by the Sketch Comedy show Fast Forward back in the late 80’s and Steve Vizard who impersonated John Elliott - and used that quote in his skits, unfortunately it stuck and was incorrectly attributed to John Elliott.

Oh they were the days. A passionate president, we were cocky and successful.

We are Carlton, F the rest. Pigs arse anyone is even close to being Carlton !!!!!!

I know he did some wrong and set us back, but loved when he was president…

Always loved having beers Friday at the Mitre in Bank Place. Big Jack would always wander out for a fag at lunch, and give us the big thumbs up when we yelled out “pigs arse !”

Pretty sure he lived opposite or maybe had an office there?
Haven't worked that side of the city for a number of years but do remember seeing him wander by the Mitre on many occastion.

RIP Jack

Had an office in the same block on collins St as the Mitre I think, likewise spent a lot of time in the Mitre myself and spoke to him a number of times around 99-01

Re Pigs Arse, although he'd happily tell you he never said it, when he signed a footy for me at an event years ago he signed it, unprompted...

John D Elliott
"pig's arse"

Well played.

Yep his office was opposite the mitre. Gave him the thumbs up one Monday morning on my way to work after a win in the 2000s.

He was emblematic of Carlton in many ways. The good the bad & all in between. I was angry at what he did but I could never bring myself to hate him. He was just too much of a character for that. Too Carlton.

In his own way he always had Carlton's back. Larger than life.

My mother was seated next to him at a luncheon early 80s I think, & has always spoken of how much of a gent he was. Wordly. Polite. Interesting on many levels.

My way I'll always remember him was his appearance on Talking Footy in 99, which I used to have on VHS & watched more than once. Classic moment when Mike Sheahan asks him if there's any interest from Carlton in the coach of the current premiership favourite coming out of contract, Kevin Sheedy.

Jack looked utterly disgusted.

"Sheedy??? Awww goodness gracious. Wes Lofts, who's a great influential man at Carlton.....Sheedy SPAT on him when he was playing for Richmond, & the two have never...spoken together again!! Sheedy, Sheedy would be the LAST. PERSON. CARLTON. WOULD EVER EMPLOY."

"EVER!!"

RIP & condolences to his family.

I quite like Tom. Maybe we'll see him involved at the club one day.

Great Carlton man.
He bled blue.
Met him twice the last time was 2002 at Stadium Australia playing the Swans.
I was at the President lunch and somehow was on his table.
We kept ducking outside for smoke.
By then he was copping it big time from all and sundry at the speeches but he just laughed it off.
He told me that they wouldn't be laughing in a few years when they were getting the new kids in.
Then I didn't quite understand what he was talking about I do now. It just never happened

He was a polarising figure but loved the blue boys
RIP Jack
