Cannot really find anything good to say about him ... just ask Swan McKay.

Took over our Club when it was the best brand Australia wide in the VFL .... and had to be thrown out kicking and screaming.

He just ended up a rather sad figure ...

That's true...same as Rice. They both wanted the fame when all the smart hard work had been done.

George Harris would have made us bigger than Manchester United back in 1980.

No doubting that Elliot loved Carlton....maybe too much.

Gotta laugh at Cazz stating "Collins came to the rescue"

Talk about looking back through Rose coloured glasses.

Blame Jack for causing our mess sure, but don't for a second credit Collins for getting us out of it.

I think if you really want to take things a fair way back, the seeds of trouble were sewn very early, I think the decline of the club actually began after the 87 flag.

May not seem like a huge thing, but watching finals recently from 88 v Pies and Dees, there was noticeably more opposition fans which hadn't been the case before. I think complacency had set in for the club, and then we lost our first 5 games in 89, and didn't really get going again until 92.

95 was a great achievement, but still built largely from the old methods, bringing in Diesel and having a core of guys still around from the U19s days, SA recruits, and other veterans who pre-dated the draft era (all of SOS, Sexton, Ang, Kouta, Harry, Sticks, Braddles, Brown, Ratts, Dean, Hanna). We got some astute pickups to compliment them, but it solidified in big Jack's mind we could just keep doing it the way we had done it previously.

Spot on.

In all his business endeavors Jack was a corporate raider.

Never built anything from the ground up.

Well kk you are telling the story.........get to it.....

From the Age Sept 13 2002.

Colonial Stadium boss and former Carlton chief executive Ian Collins yesterday launched his bid to overthrow John Elliott, claiming that the club faced a financial crisis and it might not be able to meet its obligations to new coach Denis Pagan.

Collins, who served as chief executive under Elliott for more than a decade, revealed his nine-member ticket, known as "Carlton One", and, in an aggressive attack on Elliott's performance, said the president's business and legal problems had "tarnished" the image of the club.

As expected, Collins' group has organised a petition of more than 100 signatures from members and, under corporations law, has drawn up a resolution that would lead each of the nine members of Elliott's board to be removed by a vote of the members at an extraordinary meeting.

Of course Collins didn't pony up the money to fix the debt. But if not Collins and 'Carlton One', who did step up to confront Elliot and start the wave that ousted him.

Enlighten me, I'm all ears.

Regards Cazzesman

Good comment, Hammer. That sums it up.

Very good summary.

It really was a last hurrah of the old ways.

I'm listening to the YouTube video. Thanks bluedog. It's a great example of who he was. I am saddened by the loss and my thoughts go out to his family. He was a great Carlton man but like a lot of leaders of any organisation, sometimes they never know when to call time for themselves. I heard he had a great spot with his son on the radio that I understand had a bit of a cult following. I remember someone I knew worked for him after all he resigned and said he was shattered as to the way people thought of him. Apparently he said, "Everyone hates me." And, if I remember correctly, he didn't want to go outside with that in mind. Perhaps, there's a lot of bravado about him. But, like a lot of things in life, nothing is absolutely as bad as it seems, nor is as good.

Vale John Elliot. May your sad passing provide peace for our struggling club.

I hope everyone is okay.

A larger than life, overbearing boor who, for better or worse, became the personification of Carlton supporters for many opposition supporters.

A great Carlton man, but ultimately not a great man for Carlton.

RIP

I do recall a few years after he was ousted he was on one of the Channel 31 footy shows and was bragging about how the club paid off a woman who accused a couple of the players back in the day of sexual assault.

They were not suited to the modern era and their outdated worldview and attitudes ultimately led to their downfall and brought our club to its knees.

I think this thread sums up the complexity of his character and cross-sectional view of him as a person and in regards to his contribution to Carlton.

Me thinks it's time to lock thread. There's been lots of opinions/recollections and that's fair. But now IMO it's time to move on.
